I'm looking at getting a used car soon and probably from CarMax, they seem like a decently rated company. Helps my sister purchased her Elantra there last year.

Right now I drive a 1994 Ford Explorer LX but my work trip is 40 mind back and forth every day. It's mostly highway but still, the thing drinks 16 mpg on average. I want something with 25ish.

Right now I've got my eyes on a 2010 Dodge Caliber SXT that gets almost 30. I've taken it for a test drive and it has 44k miles on it. Should be 14k after taxes and whatnot.

Any suggestions? I need something that can comfortably sit 5

I hear this reasoning all the time and it doesn't make sense to me. Just using your figures real quick it would take you a bit over 6 years to even break even, let alone realise any savings. That doesn't count for the increase in insurance that usually accompanies a newer vehicle.

There's almost never a reason to justify getting another vehicle to save money on gas unless you literally spend your life behind the wheel (like a courier, in which case you often need a bigger vehicle), or you're jumping from driving around your own tonka toy, to a Prius.

Calibers are like the plague. Bad idea for the most part. If you HAVE to purchase from a dealer carmax isnt the lowest price but it basically assures you you wont get screwed. Now you can get similar assurances with CPO cars from legit places but thats a different thread.

12K buys you a TON of car. Dont waste it on those things.

It's not reasoning...it's just a fact that gas costs an arm and a leg. I've put almost 5 grand in parts alone this last year replacing the transmission, fuel pump, new tires etc. I do my own work so I don't have to shell out for that but it's not my car either. I'm using it for transpo that is all.

Not set dead on CarMax, apologies if I gave that impression. I'm open to other places. My zipcode is 28645 to give an idea of my locale. I don't mind heading to Charlotte or whatever for a good vehicle that is 100% my own.

You didn't mention the fact your Explorer needs alot of work. However, given you spent $5k on it do you see it needing a lot more work in the near future? If not, you're probably still better off keeping it.

There's some things that need to be fixed on it still...weather strippign around the windshield needs fixed, leaks when it rains. Inside door panels are down to the metal on front drive and passenger (This was due to my brother who had the car) Engine has 235k miles on it. Not sure when that is going to go the way of the dinosaur and the fuel pump started whining Wednesday last week. Some of that is minor I guess some not so much.

Edit:

Oh yeah I am guessing the gasket at the transmission is busted, the thing leaks slowly. Have to put in fluid every 2-3 weeks. I haven't had the time to fix that. With it being cold I'll probably wait until Spring/Summer if I keep it for my own use.

look for an acura TSX if you need a hatchback car i would certainly look into a mazda 3. i would stay pretty clear of dodge chrysler products in that area while not horrid cars certainly not good cars. heck even a hyundai sonata would be a good option. like manimal sad lots of good cars at that price range
