Crossover connection and LAN problem

My desktop is connected to a college LAN, and I am trying to connect my laptop to the second network card in my desktop. I ran a crossover cable from my second Network card to the laptop, and ran the network wizzard as well as tried to manually setup the connection. Both computers are running Windows XP Professional. I cannot share the internet/intranet connection with the laptop in this manner, nor can I even share files between the computers. Is what I am trying to do possible, and if so, could someone tell me how to set it up. Thank you.😎
