I got my laptop and my desktop connected through a crossover cable. The desktop has dual LAN, so eth0 is for my DSL modem and eth1 is for my crossover cable to my laptop. The laptop only has one ethernet port, eth0. How can I share an internet connection and files between them? I got them to ping each other, but that's it.

Pinging is a good start. I don't actually know how to do what you're looking for but I believe firestarter will help you configure connection sharing.

Perhaps a simpler solution would be to get a router and have both machines connect directly to it.

Huh. I was about to suggest IPMASQ, but it sounds like firestarter does everything you want, is GPLed, and has a nice GUI.
