bumping this up, I have some extra cash so the options now are get the 5770 to XFire in the X4 slot, or get a whole new card (thinking the 5850) and throw the 5770 in the x4 just for the second monitor (don't know what else I'd use it for)
Thanks all.
Excellent advice. Grab one superior GPU, sell the other one to make back some of your money.Damn, that's a pretty tough decision. I would sell the 5770 and use that money towards a 5850. I don't like to mess around with multiple GPUs but other people seem to do fine with them.
Just get a reference model. It has the blower design that looks like this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...732&CatId=3669 . Note that they might have a different sticker depending on what AIB partner you buy it from, but they'll all have the same quality components. If you buy something that looks different (it'll have a different heatsink/cooler design), you run the risk of either A) getting cheaper quality components for the same price or B) paying more for an "overclocker edition" marketed card that really doesn't do much more over the reference model (although there are a few exceptions to both these generalizations). XFX is good as long as you stick with a reference model, otherwise they're notorious for making cheap, non-reference designs that don't overclock as well or have other more serious issues. Is there a specific 5850\5870 that's strongly recommended, personally I like the XFX with their lifetime\double lifetime warranty.
Higher FPS is not always better. I'm using Crossfire right now, and I still say if it's possible to get a single card to come close to the performance of two, you want the single card solution.2 x 5770 is faster than a 5850 though and in most games a little faster than a 5870 as well. Not sure how things start to fare once you overclock things though since both the 5770 and 5850 tend to OC a lot.
