Crossfire/SLI; x8 or x16

I've got a buddy who's looking to get a new computer and I could get one now (Core 2) with Crossfire (Asus P5W) but it's only x8 PCI-E slots. I'm ruling out the current nVidia options because I'm not a huge fan of using old chipsets when new ones are right around the corner.

Is there a noticeable difference between a dual GPU setup with x8 slots versus x16? Should I tell him to wait for the nVidia 590 or the RD600?

only at the very highest resolutions etc. with the very best cards & even then there isn't a big difference.
