Crossfire/SLI boards.

For some SLI or Crossfire models, when operated in dual graphics mode, it's either 16x or 8x. For the boards with 8x (preferably DFI), is it possible to allow both PCI-E slots to work at 16x via a chipset/BIOS update, or is this setting for 8x operation permanent?

The 16x or dual 8x option is a limitation of the chipset/board. You need to look for specific boards like the ASUS A8N32 which has dual 16x SLI capability. At this point, I am not sure how much of a bottleneck the 8x speed slots are compared to the newer 16x slots as there is no way to do a 1:1 comparrison.
