X99 Deluxe has latest bios, both R9 270 drivers are up to date and the jumper switch on the board is set 2x crossfire. I'm even using the 2 recommended PCI-E slots for CFX, but Catalyst Control panel keeps telling me the crossfire bridge needs to be connected.

Isn't CFX supposed to be done internally on the board? I mean the board didn't even come with a CFX bridge connector, but it did have an SLI one.

And yes, I cheaped out on the video cards. Waiting for the 970/980's to be released and then gonna sell the 270's on eBay.

You need a crossfire bridge. The 270s are basically just rebranded 7870s, so they still use the crossfire bridge and not XDMA.

CF bridge comes with the video cards, SLI bridge with the motherboard. Some licensing debacle. As Firebird pointed out only the 290(X) works without the bridge.
