Crossfire question

I was wondering if there are any plans on support for x700's on crossfire, i've read some things saying that you can mod it to support it. Any info would be great. (and i did try the search button)

Crossfire requires a master card and the only master cards they sell are X850, X1800, and X1900 iirc. I understand you can add any other card to the master card but if it is a slower card, the master card will slow down to the slower card... that would mean you could run a X850 and your modded X700 but 2X X700's is still slower than a single X850.

I might be talking out of my ass here but I don't think there is any reason to crossifre X700's.

Some X700 suport Crossfire. HKEPC have tested them some time ago. I think that there were Sapphire's one. Crossfire doesn't requires a master card. Only X8x0 and X1800/X1900 requires. X1300 and X1600 work in crossfire without master card, as X300 and X700 that HKEPC had tested.

From what I have heard, Crossfire is lame, why?

It seems like an SLI equivalent, except for the fact that you can run master/slave cards, and have to get the second card as a special crossfire card, which is expensive.

Is what I am saying correct?

I'm not certain, but I do think S1nnless might be correct about this.

However even if it is possible to Crossfire X700 cards I wouldn't do it, especially in your case. The reason I say this is (assuming the system at the bottom of your post is what you currently have) you would not only have to buy another X700 (or better) card but you would also need a new Crossfire capable motherboard.

It may work, it may not...I'm not sure about the X700 cards.

Even if you just want to try it you will still need a Crossfire capable motherboard.

It just sounds like a lot of work and expence for something to experment with and a bad choice as far as bang for the buck.

so if i did go through how much of a performance gain would i achieve, or would i be better off saving up for a high end card and going sli

^ cool so i would just buy the same exact card and an x-fire compatible mobo and i'm good?

Also one of you said i could run with a higher speed card like x800 or sumin and the it would lower down to x700 speeds, with that still work, cuz then i would be able to upgrade in the future.

they made their own drivers for it so i would not get that other card i was just saying it could be done.

I really dont know if anyone could tell you the performance gain doing that, since I doubt anyone has tried it

I think a single highend card would be the better choice, if you want dual cards then either SLI or Crossfire would do but those are really only necessary if a single highend card won't do, even then you dont do dual cards with low or mid range cards except to prove that the dual card concept actually works.

Maybe for you it will be enough, just remember even if you double performance (being very optomistic here) you are still using a mid range card that is already one generation (or is it two now) old.

Look at how much it will cost you to get a second card and a new motherboard then ask yourself if it still sounds like a good deal.
