i ve done a lot of reading on this topic, it really interests me as i have a 680i board, and i found a few interesting links. apparently crossfire could work on a 680i board (diamond brand cards only???) but im too sure right now, i havent really found anyone who has succesfully done it but the links speak for themselves.

im a bit tired of nvidia's driver support on my gts, so if this is indeed true i might have a new graphics card update path in the future.

EDIT: forgot this link:

Its been done sucessfully by HP.
In the Holiday 2007 issue of Maximum PC titled 2008 tech preview VOL 12, NO 12.

On page 80 they review a HP Blackbird 002 pc that uses an Nvidia Nforce 680i SLI mobo and two Ati Radeon HD 2900 cards.

Heres a quote from the review
In a ballsy move, HP adjusted Nvidia's 680i SLI bios to allow a pair of ATI Radeon 2900 XT cards to run in CrossFire mode - tweaking the noses of AMD and Nvidia in the process.

I remember thinking it wouldnt be long before someone picked that bios apart and we'd see hacked bios's all over the place.
But it never happened and i completely forgot about that review until i saw your post.

So, YEP, its possible.
