So, do you have to have an nForce SLI board to run nVidia cards in SLI mode, or can you simply use the two ports in an nForce board for Crossfire, or even single ATi cards that take up two slots, such as the ATi Radeon X850XT?
 
There is no such thing as a card requiring 2 slots.

There are DOUBLE SLOT cards which have one slot but take up 2 physically..

ati SINGLE card works fine in SLI

But no crossfire on SLI, no sli on crossfire.
 
Are you trying to build a new rig? Try to be a bit more specific, and you'll get more specific replies for your needs.

crossfire doesnt require an ATI chipset (thats why crossfire is so popular on Intel systems, they get to use a Intel chipset with their crossfire setup).. SLI requires NV's chipset.

btw. there is an exploit out there that lets you run SLI on Intels 975 chipset (not endorced by NV of course)
 
So, if I get a PCI-e card like the X850XT, it'll cover up the two PCI-e slots, but it will only utilize one, correct? And because of this, you can still run the X850XT and 7900GTX on single PCI-e ported motherboards, right?

You can run any single PCIe video card on any motherboard that has a PCIe x16 slot.

The exception here being the "SLI-on-a-board" things that some NVIDIA partners sell, which require an SLI motherboard to work at all even though they nominally only use one slot.

You can also put any two PCIe video cards into any board that has two PCIe x16 slots and run them independently. SLI/Crossfire compatibility only matters if you are trying to actually run SLI or Crossfire (using two video cards working together).

Eh, I'd like to see that actually work because as far as I know, you're either 1. running very old drivers or 2. trying to hack the ULI workaround, which no one has successfully done for the 975 boards.
