Crossfire 6950's or a single 7870?

P

phocasbuck1

I am building a computer up for Call of Duty, batman, and soon to be Diablo 3. I currently have a 6950 2gb and was wondering if adding another would be a bigger upgrade than a new 7870. I have just under $400 to spend and I can't go higher or wait.

I couldn't find any benchmarks for them in crossfire.

Thanks for any thoughts and suggestions.

Get another 6950 2gb if you can find one used for $200 or so. A 7870 is only about 25% faster then a 6950. Otherwise sell your 6950 and get a 7970.

Well the long story short is that I am getting 1 card for free. No money out of pocket. When you say the 7870 is 25% faster I am assuming that its against a single 6950, correct? I just cant find info on them in crossfire vs a 7870.

thanks for the response! :)

7870> 2x 6950's in xfire.

Also they are 6950 and a 7870 I am considering.

Flash the 6950 to a 6970, and you'll be pretty close to a 7870 with just one card. Two 6950s in Crossfire would be much faster than a single 7870. If you absolutely can't wait for another couple days (tonight?) for the Kepler NDA to lift, either pick up another 2GB 6950 or sell the 6950 and put the money towards a 7950 or 7970.

Well if you would pull your head out of your ass and see that he/I was responding to another persons post, maybe you wouldn't have to squint.

Stop acting like an idiot, if you can't reply with any sort of constructive help, DON'T RESPOND!

As for the others, I really appreciate the help and thanks for finding the links. I was looking in the wrong places.

Did you have to put on your big boy pants for that? Such a contribution bud, kudos

Although Crossfire isn't without its minor issues, I'd go with that if I were you. You already have one card so it'd be cheaper for you at this point, the only con really being the power draw over a 7870 I guess. I almost did CF myself, but I wanted the latest and greatest :D

What kind of power supply are you running?

Just look at 6990 benches and increase them - 6950's in crossfire destroy 7970 but there are issues. I will never go dual card again due to micro stutter I had however many ppl do not notice it.

So you are suggesting with any benchmark that I find with a 6950 2gb to simply double it?

So first you troll a thread by trying to put down what you thought was a new member and now you provide inane "contributions" ... You are a person of the lowest order in a former and discarded classification of mental retardation, having a mental age of less than three years old and an intelligence quotient under 25..... an idiot.

No personal attacks please.

This is a big reason I came in asking about crossfire. I read about multiple issues that were supposedly fixed with newer drivers.

If you were in my shoes, would you go with the 7870?

The micro stutter still exists regardless of their other driver issues. Or at least i still find complaints about it.

Damn, right as I was about to make the decision... Guess I will wait for the NDA and go from there.

Call of duty and diablo aren't demanding games, and neither is batman ac with dx9 visuals...

Not really, a stock 7870 is like 5-10% slower than a GTX 580. Once you overclock it to 20-30% which sorta every card is able to manage I guess, it is like 10-15%+ faster than a GTX 680, close to a 7950 stock you can say.

A 7950 is at least 40-60% faster than a 6950, stock to stock. So you should expect performance boost of at least about 50% or so going to a 7870 overclocked without CF hassles, without microstuttering. A 6950 CF on the other hand would be 70-90% faster than a single 6950 but with microstuttering and other problems, power draw etc.

An overclocked 7870 is not going to beat GTX680 by 10-15%, unless that was a typo and you meant GTX580.

Not everyone has microstuttering issues, with all the games I played, it only happened in Rift. But each users experience and perception is different from the next.
