Cross-Platform secure IM Project with wxWindows: Idea-Gathering Stage, invitation for your opinions

<Tongue in cheek>Hello loyal supporters</Tongue in cheek>

Some of you may be familiar with my project of the past year or so, BitWise Chat. Well, it's about to change in a radical way.

A lot of IM services claim to be cross-platform, but most of the non-Windows clients are pretty bad, and they definitely are not consistent with the Windows version in terms of having the same features and interface. We now plan to change all that.

Beginning soon, BitWise will be ported to the cross-platform wxWindows library, which will allow for natively compiled linux, Mac OS and Windows versions to be generated from the same source code (different wx libraries, of course). All while still retaining the same functionality from the current client (offline messaging, detached mode, encryption, etc).

In order to facilitate making the best service available, we have created the BitWise Chat forums as a medium for close communication between users and the developers, as well as a place for users to kick around ideas. Further, the forum has a focus on security, because IM and security go closely together, especially in a business setting.

And yes, we've seen Jabber--a great project. However, are trying to create a more unified experience, where there is only one client and one server--not to eliminate choice, but to create consistency. Support is easier. Development is easier. Using it's easier. The client will be flexible and customizable, but not to the point of being unwieldly (*cough* Trillian *cough*).

Consistency in simplicity. Elegance in unification.

We are particularly seeking those of you who can provide insights regarding linux and how UI and other expectations are different among the linux community.

It may sound overly ambititous, and maybe it is. But we have to try. Thanks to all in advance for your consideration.

I was actually planning on messing around with wxwindows stuff sometime (in python, anyways).

I don't know what I can do to help, I don't really do C/C++, but I could do this:

I was actually really surprised to see something like wxwindows being mentioned in ATOT of all places. 😛

The Python library is also very nice from what I hear. Why you so surprised to hear about wxWindows here? I would think with all the wanna-be nerds around here that it would be mentioned! 😉 j/k

I would certainly welcome your help. Thanks. 🙂

I don't really consider ATOT to be full of wannabe nerds, I consider unix/network/programming/sysadmin stuff to be nerdy, and the people here aren't really into that stuff. (notice the flood of replies to YAGT's and YACT's yet a thread like this gets comparitively little response 🙂)

Anyways, where are you in terms of development? Just kicking the idea around basically?

hehe I was just poking fun with the wannabe nerds statement. 😉

Well, BitWise itself is very much a real product, it's the cross-platform aspect that is new in the last couple of weeks. 🙂 We're just trying to get all the ideas that we can, if we're gonna rebuild the client, we may as well rebuild it to be the best one out there, right? 😉

I knew of bitwise already, I just mean the conversion or creation of the wxwindows version. How familiar are you with linux/unix already?

Somewhat familiar with the command prompt, but GUI development is way outside of my league. It will certainly be coming a part of my league in the future. 😉

Do you have any ideas of other forums or sources for people that might be interested in helping. This obviously isn't working out so well.

I would post in the OS forum here, there are quite a few regulars who I'm sure would have some interest.
