I am graduating high school in a few weeks, and have been planning a road trip accross this fine nation for some time now. Just me and my friend driving accross the US for two weeks. The plan is we rent a car here in New Jersey, drive to California, drop the car off in the rental's location there, and then fly back.

Anyway, all I really want to know is where do you guys think ideal places to stop are? Things to go, places to visit, stuff like that. Ultimately we're gonna end up in San Diego which is all I really want to see anyway, but I'm sure there are cool places to stop along the way. We're planning on keeping the trip northern, so southern states are out of the question. Any input would be much appreciated.

Are you sure you can rent a car at your age? i thought most car rental places require you to be at least 21....

We're planning on keeping the trip northern, so southern states are out of the question.
San Diego is just about at the Mexican border, so it's gonna be tough not to head south at some point.
If you have even a rough idea of your route it would be easier to make suggestions.
Personally, I'd try to hit as many National Parks as possible.
Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Gettysburg, Valley Forge, Mt. Rushmore, etc.

Sounds like fun - Enjoy! :)
