Cross Country car race, what would your strategy be?

Assuming you had lets say a $100,000 budget to build or buy a car, and you were actually invited to participate what would your stategery 😉 be?

Feel free to eloborate on your car and strategy as much as you like.

Fastest car, screw gas mileage?

High gas mileage, small and lightweight?

Just drive a tanker truck, with the trailer fuel hooked straight to the engine?

Solar power?

Only rules:

Your $100,000 has to cover your car gas and expenses. We can just say gas at race time is $2.50 a gallon

Best time wins, and just for argument sake, the will be Eastern tip of Long Island New York to Coronado Island in San Diego.

Maximum 3 drivers.

Vehicles must be minimum 4 wheels, no motorcycles, they can have their own race.

Porsche 968. 21 gallon fuel tank and it should average 24-25 mpg at high speed. The way it handles it'll almost never have to slow down.

Definitely a tractor-trailer (well, just the tractor part, unless I could somehow get a tanker trailer filled with gas for cheap). Humongous gas tank, and once that puppy is up to speed, it will just run over Ferrari's like they were ticks.

You have to stop to pee, or will you use one of these.

I'll pee out the side. Cut a hole in the damn floor to crap. I'll do anything to win, and I know a couple like-minded people to join me!

Your car would burn out. Either that or my F350 would just run your ass over while you were filling up.

something ridiculously comfortable - like a town car. big oil pan, radiator, beefed up cooling system, big gas tank in the trunk, good tires. Not crazy fast but it'll go as fast as you can get away with on US streets, and a town car and a porsche doing the same speed, the porsche will get pulled over.

I'd get one of those trailer hitch crappers, too, just for laughs.

Thats along the lines of what I was thinking. My thoughts were a plain white Crown Victoria, with hubcaps and the whole unmarked cop-car look going on.

And of course on of those 100 MPG things they sell in the back of popular mechanics. 😉

Before it became a timed rally, the guys that were winning it were vans with diesel engines and about 200 gallons of fuel. They drove about 75 to 80 mph. That was back when the speed limit was 55. They changed drivers in flight and never stopped.

1985 Beige Volvo 240DL Station Wagon + LS7 engine & Getrag tranny.

Plenty of speed, but a car cops would be embarrassed to pull over.
