crop video edges, what software will actually do this job?

I got this gizmo to transfer home movies and vhs tapes to dvd. but the captured images have a distortion on the bottom 5-10 pixels and the left side has a black vertical line 5-10 pixels. when I burn a dvd it looks fine on tv, because the tv viewing size is about 5-10% less than the actual image. but on a player like winDVD, media player, and others you can see the distortion. I had plans on making a few dollars by doing this as a service in my area as well, but I don't want this distortion for that.

It does this with both my hi8 sony handheld camera and my vcr. I'd be happy if there were some way to trim the affected area off of the captured footage.

I've never used and ADS Instant DVD so I can't really help much there. But the lines you see at the bottom (i'm assuming it's a static filled line) is the audio track from VHS, it's always there when you convert analog to digital unless your converter removes it. You can of course remove it yourself with a PC and vid editing gear, but I don't think it's an option for you. I use a Canopus ADVC100 to convert VHS and Hi8 to digital and it does an excellent job at removing artifacting and the static etc. Unfortunately it is only a passthru not a DVD recorder as well.

I'm going to try to find info on the ADS Instant DVD, if no one else replies I'll try and post some more info for you.

yep it's very "staticy" (as if the video was shifted and had very poor reception), I probably don't have the necessary software to remove it, the only video editing software I have is Ulead DVD movie factory 2 and I can't find anything about editing out anything like that.

I did price the Canopus box you use, ouch $260 or higher is the cheapest I could find.(and I'd need to get a firewire card, as my MSI kt4vl doesn't have headers for 1394)
The ADS Instant DVD goes for about $90 but will be returned for a refund if won't work as advertised.

Thanks for the info on that being the audio track. Anybody else using an analog to digital media converter that can share their experince with their equipment?

Yup, it's a pricey box. It would seem from other forums on the net, that other people using the ADS Instant DVD don't seem to have that problem. If it looks like it's been shifted slightly off center it may be something else as well. Maybe you can email them for more support/return?

Also these forums are frequented by ADS staff which could be of help to you if you post it there. Also plenty of other users who may be able to help you more.

cool, I've already sent 2 e-mails to support.adstech.com, one as I tried to update my videostudio7 to be able to capture with this box, and onther to ask about this problem, they fixed the web site(never replied to my e-mail saying it was fixed) and I don't expect a response from them on the 2nd e-mail until tomorrow. I hope I don't have to return it as I bought it from TigerDirect and their service department sucks big time. Thanks for all the help.

there is also an instant dvd usb2.0 version(I have the 1.1 since 5Mb/s is fine for transfering from vhs and mini8 to dvd for all practicle purposes) and they run just shy of $200.

anyone who knows the handle names of any ads staff please pm me so I can get a little quicker response from them, t-i-a.

alrighty, I sent the ads box back, and bought a canopus unit...the picture quality is far supperior, but I still have the staticy problem on the bottom(although no where near severe), does anyone know of any software to crop the edges off of a video? I've tried virtual dub, but it won't work with any of my video files for some reason, I get an error everytime I try to open a vid file. I'm using Ulead Video Studio 7 for my recording/editing software, but it has no options that I can find to crop the edges.

There is numerous software that can be used for this, try doom9.org and www.dvdrhelp.com for helpful guides and howtos and links to all of the software (a lot of it is even free...)
