Has anyone been there? My friend and I are going to Europe and looking for places to stay. How cheap is it compared to western Europe and the United States? Is the weather nice towards the end of May?

Been there many times to visit family, but never this early. Usually late summer. But end of May it would be nice and warm already. Probably mostly upper 70s on the coast.

But it is very well priced there for food and lodging. Rentals are pretty expensive though and air fare directly into Croatia's airports tend to be more expensive which is why I like to land in nearby countries like Austria or Hungary and rent a car there. Saves me easily several hundred bucks.

Where do you plan to go in Croatia?

I always love the old coastal cities such as Dubrovnik, Korcula, Trogir, Zadar, Sibenik for sight seeing but my favorite is Split because its a great blend of old and new. Great night life there. But for best night life is probably Makarska

We were taking a look at Split, Hvar, and Dubrovnik. Basically anywhere with a beach, nature, and good food.

How was driving in Croatia? I've never driven outside of America and am still relatively young, so that kind of bothers me. But it would definitely give us freedom to go anywhere and at anytime. I've heard just driving along the coast is beautiful. We will be flying from London, and I saw some tickets to Split for around $130 with EasyJet. How much would it cost to rent a car in Austria and leave it in Croatia? We are thinking of taking a ferry over to Italy and then going to Paris by train where we will spend several days at the end of our trip.

Yup those are excellent destinations for those requirements. Though I tend to prefer beaches away from the bigger cities like Split and Dubrovnik. At Hvar you will find an excellent opportunity for excellent beaches - just look for taxi boats in HVar's harbor that takes you to the little islands just across the bay. One thing to keep in mind is unless you go to the public beaches that have pebbles or the very few sandy beaches you will most likely come across jagged rock beaches and sea urchins in the water. Best bet is to buy a set of water shoes asap - they sell them in practically every little street market along the coast. Something with a nice hard plastic sole.

Everyone in my family is worried about driving in Croatia because they always say people drive crazy there. But I never found it any worse than the roads and drivers here in New York. Croatia now has awesome modern highways which let you drive across the country in no time. But they are not scenic as they avoid the coast. While taking the old coastal roads are quite scenic its also very slow moving with a couple of key choke points like Omis... always traffic there!

The north coast (istria) is nice. Most south of that is just fucking rock though, although some of the towns are neat. (eg. dubrovnik). It doesn't really get green again until montenegro.

Montenegro is cheaper and just as nice/nicer IMO. But everything is so close, you can see it all.

There's a big autobahn style road inland a bit. The actual coastal highway is pretty windy and narrow, don't drive it drunk or at night. :p

They recently clamped down on driving in croatia, I got a $400 ticket for 190km/h in a 130 zone two years ago :(
