Anyone live there or ever been on vacation?

My wife is getting on my case about planning our vacation for next October and I can't figure out where to go, but I'm trying to avoid the Euro!

For the people that have been there how are the prices for food and beer?

Any suggestions on where to go and/or where to stay? Probably looking to spend a few days in Zagreb and then a week or so in some of the Costal regions.

Thanks in Advance!

You are trying to avoid the Euro? Because of the $ being in the shitter? Not a bad call on that at all. I think Venezula is a 1:1 with us now.

I dated a girl from Zagreb for a little while. Of course she loved it (too bad youre married, the women are amazing ;) ), but she did show me pictures. IMHO, its a beautiful place. We lost touch a while ago so thats all i have to offer, sorry. :(

Yeah - trying to avoid the Euro because the exchange rate sucks! No thanks on Venezula also ;)

I know this is in Europe, but Lithuania is beautiful. Can see the castles and old world things you can see in the rest of Europe, but 1USD is about 2.50 Litas. It's a pretty small country, so you could travel north to Latvia (bit more expensive... 1USD to 1.5LVL) and Estonia (10.85 EEK to 1USD). The food is great, beautiful sights, and if you're into it, the bars are pretty hoppin'.

Yeah, I've definately thought about other Eastern Europe places, but Croatia is a good compromise for my wife and I because she likes the beaches and I like the old historic stuff. Maybe I'll just leave her at home and bring one of my buddies and hit up some of those places ;)

Croatia doesn't use the Euro. They have their own currency called the Kuna.

Okay so I dredged this up from the past and did not bother to read the original post thoroughly enough. My bad.

I'm from croatia and been there many times- speak the language fluently, so maybe I have biased opinion, but I'd say it's the best place to vacation in europe right now if u want a good bang for your buck.

October is a good time to go, because the height of tourism in croatia is july/aug. sept might be even better though because it will of course be warmer, but even in october the waters are comfortably warm. The coastline is really the highlight of the country- as the water is so clean and warm. The coastal cities Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar, Makarska are the best cities for foreigners to visit. I highly suggest you try to visit all four of those. Hvar is on an island but you can get a ferry from Split every day.

English has been taught there in the schools for many years now so it should be no problem speaking to the locals when ordering food or getting a room.

You can get something like 5 kuna for a dollar now (it used to be over 6) so you will find excellent value for your dollars. The food is great- mostly seafood dishes with popular ones being squid, whole shrimp (scampi?), mediterranean sea bass (branzini). Also make sure to get something called cevapi (pronounced chevapi) which are grilled sausages which is a combination of lamb and pork with some spices. Man there's nothing like stopping off at a cevapi joint in the middle of the night after getting drunk at a local club and getting a cevapi sandwich....

anyways, feel free to pm for more details on anything

Mmmm, your post made me hungry for some cevapcici. I gotta go to "Stari Most" in Queens for some. They have the best cevapi this side of the Atlantic.

Oh man, cevapcici is awesome, especially with some of that sauce and freshly baked bread.

I'm going to by cevapcici for breakfast tomorrow and go with the sauce i find that is closest and the white newly baked bread.

I think i'll surprise my kids with that for breakfast, they'll love it. :)

Hmm, never heard of the place. I go to Astoria/Long Island City in Queens alot so I would like to check this place out. I guess it's Bosnian? Stari Most means old bridge so that may be reference to the city Mostar in Bosnia with it's famous bridge. (cool place to visit too btw, but sarajevo is really awesome!).

do you like burek? flakey pastry dough usually filled with cheese or ground meat? There's a Bosnian place in long island city that makes incredble bureks- think it's called Djerdan. their sign even says "best burek in town" ;)

I like how they compare the prices downtown the financial center of the world, London and some of the other ones, anyone ever been shopping in Venice, Italy? Or in Stockholm Sweden or in Helsinki Finland? The prices are the same pretty much everywhere you go except for London, you don't go to London to do your shopping if you aren't prepared to pay for it, some are.

It is, after all, the HQ of the financial world.

I gotta find that burek place, and you should stop by Stari Most. Didn't cevapi and burek originate from Bosnia? They know how to do it right. Even the bread at Stari most is amazing. They are around 42nd street (or ave) and a block or two off of Northern Blvd. There are a bunch of good places to eat around there. My dad has been taking me to the Istra club since I was a kid and Rudar is around there. There service is slow as heck but the food is worth the wait. They serve porgies as branzin and the ligne na zaru is delicious too. The sauce over the ghocci this time of year will vary depending on if someone bagged a deer or not. Dad would always get the fuzi or tripe.

I tohught it originated from Turkey, but I'd have to say Bosnians do it best. The best cevapi I ever ate was at a cafe across a river from where Archduke Ferdinand was assinated in Sarajevo. oh man that was pure bliss

yeah istra club is a cool place. there's also the bar skorpio's and cafe valentino both on broadway, which are some good places to go to at night for drinking/meeting people. only thing i hate is they get so filled with cigarette smoke makes my eyes sting
