Hey guys, i asked for some help in usenet for installing a FOP38 and i got this response:

<< thin layer of paste on the core only!.....blob's of paste hold heat around the core (not good)....... (thin) like in paper) lift slightly on the sink while installing (latching).......(PUT NO DOWNWARD PRESSURE) on the sink when installing........latching the clip can be tricky (get some help) if needed......go straght to the bios and check your temp's......if they rise much past 50c the sink most likely did not seat properly.......remount the sink and repeat the procedure again.......make sure the 4 (round) rubber feet are on the cpu deck's corner's also......one more thing make sure the offset on the sink matche's the offset on the socket when Installing.......and ofcourse check your manual for help...... >>

Is this good advice? Also, in the pics of people applying arctic silver, i see them applying more than just a "thin layer (like paper" of AS... how much should i put on?

Yes, a thin layer is what you want. Almost so that it is opaque (as in you can faintly see through the AS to the core below it). The first time I put my FOP on, I could tell just by looking at it that it wasn't seated correctly, because it was at an angle, and there was clearly space between the heatsink and the chip. This was quickly fixed though.

Just take it slowly, don't be TOO forceful and you should be ok. btw - you do realise how LOUD the FOP38 is, don't you? ;)

You may also want to bend the clip a little before installing the HSF. It makes installation/removal so much easier.
