Critique my work build

It looks like it will be a decent box at a decent price. The only thing I question is that you are going for a socket 754 setup. If you went for a socket 939 motherboard and a slower cpu, you could get a dual core athlon later. Socket 939 also allows for dual channel memory. However, it would probably cost a little more up front.

Cheers.

Why get a seperate graphics card? If you're not gaming then onboard would be cheaper. (Unless that deal is really stunning i suppose).

Blooming heck the DDR prices have shot up haven't they!

Yeah but the combo deal from Newegg on the processor/ram only counts towards that particular motherboard. Plus the video card is only $30. And yeah, I'm bummed at ram prices 🙁

18" SATA cable - $3
Antec Sonata case & PSU - $90
2gb G.Skill ram - $195

I already have Windows XP & a DVD burner. How's this setup look? About ~$500 total, right around my budget right now. Any suggestions or should I go with it?
* 2GB with the single core, single channel is overkill.
* Ditch the 120GB 7200.9 and use some of the $$ saved from the memory to get a 320GB 7200.10

Nah, I use Adobe CS and need the ram. I think I'll go with the 320gb drive though, thanks! 🙂

Antec PSUs = bad, try Seasonic, FSP, or Enhance.

For a high quality but basic case InWin is one of the best, give them a look.

A good InWin + FSP or Seasonic should be possible for around $90-100.

I've been using an Antec NSK4400 for a few weeks now, it's $18 cheaper and almost silent with the stock PSU and exhaust fan.

I'm using a Zalman 7000b-alcu instead of the arctic, on an X2 3800+, temp stays under 40C (30-33 on boot).

FYI seasonic makes some of Antec's quiet PSUs but I don't know if this is one of them.
