Hi,

I have a friend, and as a graduation present I want to give her some ram, which her computer really needs. Her pc is an old pavilon and it currently has less than 35 MB of ram. Here is a link, with the specs.

I am thinking about getting a stick of 128 MB of ram for her, but my question is WHAT TYPE OF RAM TO GET?. I was thinking about some PC100 since that's what the specs say, but I can get a better deal buying PC133.

Is it ok, if I put pc133 in this pc?

Thanks for the info,

(Ahhhh........The joys of Installing XP Pro at 4am! Fun)

Anyway, to answer YOUR question. Yes, getting either PC100 or PC133 will work all the same (PC133 will default back to the slowest speed, if any). Just get whatever is the cheapest. Since It is a HP Pavilion (I service a few of these at my job), your best/only bet for upgrade option is really with the RAM; as the CPU is kind of more trouble than it would be worth at this point. You said you want to get 128MB stick, well why not 256? I suggest this as SDRAM prices are pretty rock bottom these days, and the spread between 128MB and 256MB is minimal. Just one thing to remember, if your going to install the new RAM module, take whatever RAM stick is in the first DIMM slot on the MB out, and put in the new stick. Usually this slot is labeled 0, but it could be labled 1?

Also, since its a HP Pavilionl, were really not talking about cutting edge technology, even when it came out. So you don't have to be picky about what RAM brand to get. Yes, even PNY or the like from Best Buy or something will do.

Hope this works. If you have anyother questions, PM Me.

P.S. I wish I had a friend who would give me RAM :D

When I was techie, some of the older mainboards could not take PC133 ram. It was throw up fatal errors.

I would visit the memory manufacture's like Kingtson and Crucial and look for the specific part number to match your HP.

Don't buy her ram, I bet her parents are going to buy her a new comptuer for college. Instead buy her something photo Album related or get her flowers to wear/hold during/after the graduation ceremony.

Refer to the OT forum for more ideas:)
