Critique my system

I would like you to critique my system and see if it is a gaming rig. If not, where can I make adjustments to make it into a gaming rig? I want to make an upgrade that would last me at least 2 years.

Chieftec silver aluminum case with window and 420 psu
AMD 1700+ XP with Cooler Master HSF
2 x 80GB Maxtor
ATI Radeon 9500 Pro
768MB DDR PC2100 (2 x Crucial/ 1 Kingston)
Optorite DD0203 DVD
Asus A7N8X Deluxe and using Nvidia Soundstorm

What would you rate this from 1-10? I am thinking of putting in a 2500+ but I think I will need to update the memory along with the processor? Thanks.

Hold back on a HDD and spend the saved $ on the 2500+, a radeon 9700 gold and 1gb of pc2700/pc3200 instead of 768 of pc2100.

As it is, I rate it a 7.

here's what i would do:

1) get the WD1200JB instead of 2 80 gigs
2) yes get some faster memory along with it
3) 1700 is fine for now. you can always get a faster CPU when prices drop

and "I would like you to critique my system and see if it is a gaming rig. If not, where can I make adjustments to make it into a gaming rig? I want to make an upgrade that would last me at least 2 years."

well it is different from every person. i mean everyone has different definitions on what does "last 2 years" means. if you ask me my computer that i built last year would last 3 more years, but i am already feeling the urge to upgrade a little bit. since your plan is not top-notch even as of now, by next year or so your computer will not play smoothly on some games already

and heh you mentioned "where can i make adjustments to make it into a gaming rig". you think there are a bunch of people walking around the country and judging whether a computer is a "gaming rig" or not then put on a sticker of approval? again it all depends on what you think!

Doesn't coldcut mean that this is his current rig, or am I way off?

If I understand this correct, I say that your system is fine. At least wait until the Athlon64/socket 775 P4's are here.

You are correct. This is the system I'm using now.

then it would be better if you mention the term "upgrade for my current rig" somewhere

upgrading from a 1700 to a barton does not make it fly. save the money and hold out until it is too slow to do whatever you need

Forgot to mention that I almost have the same system. XP1800, 768mb, GF440MX (soon to be upgraded). And it plays BF1942 ok. I have debatted whether or not to upgrade the cpu with myself, and I decided to wait until there is something way faster. At least hold off on the upgrade until the new cpus and mobos/HL2 are here.

How much do you get in 3dmark01 with that thing? Just curious as I'm planning to buy a R9500/9600Pro or 9700NP.

10,600 in 3D Mark 2001 Second Edition at default stock settings, not much of an improvement from my Ti4200 which had scores of 9,600 at default stock settings.

Let me just tell you guys that there is no point in upgrading to 9500 Pro if you have a ti4200 or above nvidia card. I only noticed a slight increase in performance.

I don't know how much difference a 9700 pro would make though. I was hoping to achieve around 12,000 on default settings with 9500 pro. Disappointed with the results.

Is 3519 in 3dmark03 considered a good score? I'm not familiar with the new 3d benchmark program scores rate.

sinperruff is right, it depends on what your using it for. If your playing high end games that are cpu/memory/video intensive then you probably want to upgrate your CPU (barton) , get faster memory (DDR 400) and a better video card(9800 pro or 5900FX). If i were you I would just upgrate as prices go down for the newer products. Your hard drive space and Motherboard is fine.

I give your current system an 8 out of 10.
