I'm looking to build a new system and these are the components I am considering using:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX Mobo
CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB DDR 400 (PC 3200)
BFG Tech BFGR78256GTOC Geforce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive

Still researching my cooling options and PSU options

How much an improvement in performance can I expect over my current system:
P4 2.8Ghz
512 MB RAM
GeForce Ti4600 128 MB
WD Ultra DMA 133 120 GB HD

For gaming, I'm expecting a significant improvement due to the video card and the memory, but how will it improve overall performance of the system?

Please feel free to add any suggestions

Get an EVGA 7800GT, it comes with a mobo and BF2, I hope that ram is 2x1GB so you can run at 1T and not 333mhz. Otherwise looks good :) The improvement will be huge, gaming and in everything else, that dual-core will make multitasking very nice.

If you have a big budget, then XP-90 with Panaflo high speed for cooling, Antec P180 for case and Fortron Blue Storm 500W(yes im biased :)) for a PSU.

I would get an MSI K8n neo 4 mobo. better and cheaper. dfi lanparty for oc'ing.
Do you really need that WD raptor? If not go with something cheaper like Seagate barracuda/wd caviar. unless you have lots of $$$.
What case are you planing on using?
Get a good PSU - Antec, Seasonic, or OCZ. 450+ watts probably.
For cooling I would add 2x 120mm fans front/back to your case.

The eVGA 7800GT and free SLI motherboard is a really great deal. I say go for that. I like the Antec P180, and a good 450W+ Fortron/Sparkle should be good. Oh, and if you have 4 sticks of RAM, you can still run them at 400mhz, not 333mhz, but it'll be at 2T, which hurts performance.

You can't always OC it to 400mhz, many ppl cudnt push it back up to 400mhz, but oh plz dont claim that mobo is free...its not, its the reason they bump up the price -__

1. Drop the Raptor, and get a Seagate hard drive. Trust me.
2. Get an XP-90 and a Panaflo.
3. Switch out the A8N-E for an MSI K8N Neo4 SLI or Ultra.
4. Get an eVGA 7800GT.

Take a look at the Epox 9NPA3+ motherboard. It got a gold editors choice here on Anandtech.

the evga 7800gt deal comes with a motherboard or BF 2. it does not come with both

also, that Asus A8n-e motherboard seems to be fine. it can get a decent overclock, has nice board layout. its very good

You don't need to overclock. The older Winchester memory controllers bumped the speed down to 333mhz, but the improved memory controller on the Venice, San Diego, Manchester, and Toledeo cores can handle 4 double-sided sticks at 400mhz.

SpeedsterZ28, the new puter will blow away your current rig. Not just in games either.

You can't go wrong with the XP-90 and Panaflo fans.
I like my Raptor, but are you aware that Raptors are the worst value, in terms of price/GB? Newer drives, like Seagate's, are nearly as quick. You might not even notice a difference. And 200GB for $100 ain't bad, either.
Stick with the BFG vid card, they whip ass (it's faster, good tech support, lifetime warranty- it's worth the extra $25)
I highly recommend Seasonic power supplies.

Oh yeah, Welcome to AT!

I would get a non sli to save money its not like your gonna sli when a new graphics card comes out that beats your 7800gt x 2 in sli in benchmarks.

that would save you money plus if you got a seagate hd have more space instead of speed from looking at benchmarks you will see it's small
