Critique my resume, please

My resume

I'm especially concerned with the objective (which I know can/should be changed according to the specific job you're going after), and even more so with the education/certification section. I'm unsure of both the layout as well as the content.

I went through a tough time in 2000-2003 and wasn't sure what I wanted to do... so I didn't stick to a degree when I was at the 4 year university and didn't do all that well in my classes either. I don't want to lie on my resume, but I don't exactly want to announce to the world that I don't have much to show for those 2.5 years of my life. I mean, I went back to school and have worked my butt off since then, so I'm not particularly ashamed... it's just that I know there's some closed-minded people out there who would just write me off as some sort of slacker simply because I haven't finished a 4 year degree yet.

Anyway, looking for some feedback - positive or negative, as long as it's constructive. Thanks in advance!!

On technical resumes I usually suggest you provide some sort of a summary of qualifications/skills/abilities. Your resume has a nice structure to it, but I'm left wondering what it is you do and want to do.

I also suggest that the objective be more specific. A lot of people make the mistake of being too general, and to me this implies that you don't quite have the direction you need in your career. Be very specific: "This is what I want."

Other than that it looks pretty good.

To lazy to reaady much of it, but take out the word "unfamiliar". It makes you seem like you don't understand stuff.

Also I usually put Education before experience, since its much shorter. That way the first half of the resume has all the topics.

Also the 2 colleges you when to before the you go your assocates is not relevant to any employeer. Take them out. If you want o list things you learn but have not certifation in then make topic like Software under education and list eveything you know. Even the thing you learn while Getting your AA. For you AA you should only list what, wher and when. Move the relevant course to software.

Your resume look like mine from a few years back 🙂

I tried to incorporate the qualifications/skills/abilities into the bullets in experience - so if I list them seperate should I reword the experience bullets to avoid redundancy?

As for the objective - I was trying to think of something somewhat general for posting the resume on sites like careerbuilder and monster. Should I just leave it off in that case and only include it when sending the resume to specific companies? I've read that you should change it for each job you apply for, so...?

Also just wondering if you agree with OrSin's comments - I'm sure I'll get some conflicting responses, but I'm hoping to at least get a 'majority' opinion.

The only reason I included them was because of the 'gap' that is present from 2000-2003. Did you have a similar gap in yours, and, if so, were you asked many questions about it?

Thanks for the replies guys!

I would only mention the school where you graduated from. List all applied courses (from all schools) under it, and if there is a question when you give transcripts, just claim transferred credits from the other schools.

Previous work experience usually hold far more weight than education, unless you have none, or have a masters degree.

I dont like your objective statement, because to me it says "Temporary Stepping Stone" without actually saying it.

Consider mine:
To use the information technology knowledge, skills & experience I possess in a full-time permanent position in a mid-size fast paced organization, which promotes workforce development through training, promotion, and leadership opportunities.

just a side note... reviewing resumees with all the missing information is very annoying.
I dont think anyone is going to steal your resumee or identity through your resumee, but its just annoying to see X's and blatently fake information.

All I changed was my name and address, and x'd out the names of the companies I worked for. Didn't think it would be that big of a deal, and I'd rather be safe than sorry I suppose.

Aside from that, thanks for your suggestions - I'll update accordingly and re-post to see what everyone thinks.

address and phone number I guess are accaptable...
but xing out company and school names... that to me i guess is the more annoying part.
afterall... that is part of selling yourself.

resumee X...
penn state + worked at IBM

vs

resumee Y
westmoreland community college + worked at best buy

which one would you choose?

But I'm not selling myself to the forums here, I'm just trying to get comments on the layout and language of my resume. Plus, the companies I worked for were all local businesses that no one would know anyway.

When you go to work for a larger company, internal employees are also considered customers. I believe you should highlight your people skills in some way as well.

Overall, I believe it is well done.

mind elaborating... as in, where I should add that in and in what form? Thanks 🙂

Broad Example:

Worked to ensure customer satisfaction by performing follow-up calls...

Anything else you can think of that would specifically convey that you can work well with people/team player.

I guess I didnt say it right, but in your case it might not matter.
I said earlier, almost always employment experience is more important... but not always...

you can usually offset crappy empoyment or school, by a prestigious other...

IE... If i graduated from harvard university, but worked at freds computer shop... I might wanna flaunt harvard instead of work experience.

and actually, why not sell yourself to the forums? lots of job opportunities get listed here. and plenty more managers at technology companys read and post here.
what better way to possibly find an opportunity?

I'm pickin' up what you're puttin' down now... misunderstood what you were trying to say.

Good point, also, re: job opportunities from the forums. I'll definitely keep that under consideration.
