My boss has given me the opportunity to build a machine to replace my "slow" Dell.
The Dell at my work is a P4 2.5Ghz 400FSB, 1GB PC2100 single channel, 60GB 5400RPM Hard Drive it is just not cutting it mainly because I does not have enough RAM (it is maxed) and the hard drive is way to slow.

Cost is obviously a concern. I do development in Visual Studio .NET and VB6 with both IIS & SQL Server 2000 running on the local machine. The database load is fairly heavy and I/O performance is very important. Although I do not need an LCD I do use this machine for about 8 hours a day, so less eye strain would be nice. The DVD+-RW drive is for backing up the databases that are several GBs. The video card is the cheapest I could find with DVI (for the LCD screen). The case I chose because it comes with a quality power supply. The RAM is fairly cheap but has good reviews from the store I?ll be purchasing it from (ncix) & I have a stick of the memory running on my A7N8X system at home.

I researched into AMD & Intel systems. I choose to go the P4 route because the motherboards are more attractive for the P4, (4 DIMM slots, native SATA). Most AMD boards only have 3DIMM slots and Socket 940 boards which have 4+ DIMM slots require registered memory which is very pricey plus Opertons are not cheap.

So what do you think? Any changes I should make or foreseeable problems I missed?

PS. If you know anywhere in Canada that sells any parts I picked cheaper please let me know.
