Critical Elements for an Action - Strategy Game

What constitutes a good Action-strategy game? Any ideas, comments or suggestions? We created a game based on the original BattleZone Games and I was wondering:

A: Did anyone play the original BattleZone Game release by Pandemic in 1998 or BattleZone 2: Combat Commander?
B: If you did play either of those games, is there anything about them that you thought made that game fun to play?
C: Any suggestions for recently published Action_strategy Games that you thought were fun to play?

I personally found BattleZone to be the most like a "Chess Game" that (at the time) was the most realistic representation of actual military planning and execution. I really liked the ability to plan my assaults on my adversary, and then evaluating the results (did i win or get my ass kicked), then tweaking my plans to see if I could get a better result (win or get my ass kicked less).
