I know someone out in the boonies who doesn't want dial-up and can't get DSL or cable. She's fond of AT&T, but their TOS states that that while up to five gigabytes is $60, each additional GB is a whopping $480. Ouch!

Cricket says that they've got an "unlimited" plan for only $40, though it seems they throttle quite heavily after the first 5GB. Still, at least that reduces the chance of an unwanted $1,000 bill. Assuming I can use a parabolic reflector to get enough signal, would this be advisable?

Cricket does not have contracts or ETFs I think. If anything you will have to buy the wireless adapter/card. Much of Cricket's network is EVDO rev 0 but some is Rev A (rev A is faster). Also check Cricket's coverage, they are a newer company and do not have as much coverage as ATT does I think. I am also pretty sure Cricket would limit you to 0 to maybe like 300MB data per month if you are roaming and then charge you fees (pretty much all the carriers do this) so make sure the signal/coverage is good where your friend lives.

As for the EVDO rev 0 vs rev A. Rev A is faster at downloading but not that much faster maybe less than 1 mbps. Its improvement is in the upload speed and latency is much better with rev A.

Try posting here for better experiences. Be sure to provide a location of where she will be using the service.

If anything I would be a little worried about their coverage.

See this thread for other people's experiences with Cricket (your service will vary depending on area of course).

I don't know how she is getting $480 per GB extra. Most carriers (Sprint or Verizon) do $0.05 per MB extra. So if she goes 1 GB over it would be like $50 more. Still a lot but not as much as what you mentioned. ATT for my area code also does $0.05/MB over. So maybe it is because of her location?
