you don't have to, because your measuring the number of shades difference from the original.

Assuming both yellows are equally tough to clean...

to measure the same amount of yellowness, there is a scale to see what color your teeth are. my assumption is that they were all the same color on the scale.

this still doesn't matter completely though b/c there are different factors that cause teeth to yellow. from smoking to drinking coffee to just not brushing your teeth the way we should... each of these have their own factors on how able they are to whiten.

The first went to a Dentist.
The second used the white strips.
The third used a whitening toothpaste.

The Dentist made a 6 shade change in white level.
The Strips did a 2 shade change.
The Toothpaste did nothing. No change at all.

Each was used for the length stated or 30 days in the case of the toothpaste.

I am going to try the strips. Toothpaste is a waste of time to whiten.

Mark

I know some of the toothpastes claim something like 2 or 3 shades in one tube, which generally lasts me more than a month. Also, how can toothpaste be a waste of time if you already brush? At least I hope you do.... :)

I am not saying that brushing is a waste of time.
I am only saying that if your goal it to whiten, brushing alone does not truly help nearly what they claim.

Yes there is a way to tell the level of yellowing. Next time you go to the Dentist have them show you the
tooth shade thing. Basically it's about 15 teeth looking things each slightly more yellow then the next.
This is what all the whitening products use in their claims as to shades of difference.

In the tests by Fox 25 only the Dentist lived up to it's claim of up to six shades whiter.
While the toothpaste showed no difference at all.

One of the side effects of the strips was gum sensitivity, but according to Crest it was suppose to go away in about
2 weeks and that is what they found to be true as well.

I tried to buy them, but DrugStore.com said I had already bought from them and can't use the coupon.
I have never bought a thing from them. So I don't know what their deal is.

Dominick's food stores here in Chicago has them for $19.99. Use that $7 coupon to bring the price down to $13.99 + 8.75% tax. Total comes to $15.21. (If you prefer to not have to wait to get stuff through the mail...)

you know if you go to ebay....you can usually find whitestrips for $15 too. you can also get the professional version which is stronger and i believe they give you 52 strips(?). the diff between the OTC version and the pro version is you have to buy the pro one from a dentist. but on ebay, anything is possible. ;)

i got a toothbrush and a special whitening toothpaste tube with the package too. I think total i paid $34+S&H. not quite the same as the $15 deal for the OTC part but just a heads up for all the folks interested.

i can attest first hand that "drfreshsmile" is a good ebay seller to look for if you want the professional whitening strips.

I thought you can't sell prescription stuff like the pro strength on eBay? If that's allowed, then I've got prescription testosterone patches to sell!

This is a good deal for the Whitestrips and the Simply White. Thanks for the info. I'll get them, but I can't kick my Coke and coffee habits. :(

is that why you are the yellow peril?

my mother is a dentist; and according to her whitening really is not good for your teeth. She says it weakens the enamel; and over time may accelerate tooth decay (especially if you have poor brushing habits). but then again i suppose people do worse things to look better than weaken their teeth.

Of course she's going to say that ... 'cause if everybody can make their teeth white using over-the-counter products, there'll be no need for dentists for regular cleanings.

she said that to me when i asked her if she could whiten _my_ teeth for me. and you don't go to the dentist just to keep your teeth white... i mean a hygenist _cleans_ your teeth; and removes plaque build up; not to mention getting things pulled, bridges, caps, etc. only a moron would want white teeth with enormous cavities in them.

Manchu guy==You should keep it quiet. People with enormous cavities will eventually mean more business for your mother.

Hi guys I'm a Dentist let me drop some knowledge on these Crest Strips and give you as much as I know. Let's actually begin with what has been proven effective in order of efficacy(lowest to highest).

"Whitening Toothpaste"- the toothpaste contains nothing more than normal fluoride dentrifices(toothpastes) and a special abrasive. The abrasive is the "whitening agent". That's what they don't tell you. There might be a little Hydrogen Peroxide in the toothpaste, but the only way you are going to get the Hydrogen Peroxide to work is to keep it on your teeth for 5+ hours(this is a low guess since the Hydrogen Peroxide has a concentration of >1 %). Now how long does it take to brush your teeth? 1 minute? 3 Minutes? You'd have to leave this stuff on your teeth for hours. "Whitening toothpaste" is not worth it, I even tell my patients the toothpaste that comes with the bleaching kits I sell are not worth using.

Crest Strips- I really like this product. Crest is a great company, they stand behind their product. I have a few patients who use the OTC version as well as the professional kits, and they love it. Hydrogen Peroxide is the "whitening agent" in this product. The OTC concentration of Crest Strips is 6.5%, in the professional kit the concentration is a bit higher(MSDS says 35% in solution). Now, the only issue I have against the strips is the application of the strip. The strip is placed over the teeth and sometimes the bleaching agent comes in contact with your gum tissues, tongue, and other soft tissues not meant to be bleached. It basically gets everywhere and is somewhat messy. If you have any kind of malocclusions, tipped, and/or rotated teeth I would not recommend the strips. It's a great product don't get me wrong, I prescribe a 20% Carbamide Peroxide bleaching tube and it is just as effective as the Professional Crest Strip Kit, as far as bleaching power. Let's move on to Dentist prescribed bleaching options.

Dentist-Prescribed - There are a bunch of options out there, whether you do a one stop in-office bleaching session or an at home kit. The in office bleaching session is where we can get out our "big-gun" bleach. We're talking 30-40% Carbamide Peroxide, it can bump almost anyone a few shades in less than an hour. The bleach is activated by heat from a powerful blue light. The blue light is usually a powerful halogen light. I was told by a bleaching expert that you could just use a blowdryer to activate the in-office bleach but that would probably scare everyone away. Okay possible side effects of an in-office session? Burns, burns, burns. Chemical burns are no joke, a little dab of this stuff on soft tissue will cause a burn if left more than 20 seconds sometimes less.

At home kits are in my opinion, the best option. What has to be done first is we make a mold of your mouth. This is done by taking an impression of your upper arch of teeth, then your lower arch. The impressions are then poured up and a custom tray is formed specifically for your teeth. The tray will only fit your mouth. This method of application of bleach gets the bleaching agent to the specific teeth. Minimal bleach comes in contact with your gums, provided the trays are made well and you wipe the excess bleach away. The only possible side effect with at home kits, as well as any other bleaching option is sensitivity. Whether it is tooth or gum sensitivity, the sensitivity is transient. Meaning, if you stop bleaching, the sensitivity will dissipate. The only issue with at home kits is price. Once you shell out the money for the trays however, the bleach is inexpesive. Trays can run you from 300-600$ depending on the dentist. Bleaching tubes (pack of four can last you up to a year--2 years if you refrigerate the pack) 20-50$.

Things you need to take care of before you bleach-- This is important, I tell all my patients this before I prescribe any bleaching product. Composite/Plastic/Tooth Colored fillings/Crowns/Porcelain inlays/onlays do not bleach like your natural teeth. If you bleach and have a lot of fillings/crowns that were done on the front 6-8 teeth, those teeth will be more noticeable(shades will not match) more after you bleach. What that means is you might have to have those fillings/crowns redone to match your new bleaching shade. Of importance also is your periodontal health. Teeth that are loose, have large cavities, have pain/sensitivity, are contraindicated for bleaching. Sorry I rambled a bit, any questions Dental-related please feel free to email me napzard@yahoo.com

Thanks naps.

My fiance has used this twice. The first time about 6 months ago and it was noticeable. The 2nd time about 2 weeks ago and this time it was a HUGE difference. Her teeth are so white now. I hear nothing but great things about the Whitestrips.
