Honestly... wouldn't the mailman figure out something's wrong when they hadn't taken mail in in 3 years? Wouldn't people notice if the lights were on all night?

Rubin discovered the bodies Wednesday when he went to check on them after learning the local government was about to sell their house for nonpayment of taxes.
Wouldn't it be the next of kin to find out instead of the friend...unless the Rubin is listed as the next of kin.....humm?

I live about 20 minutes away from Lehigh Acres! It was rather freaky to hear our front page newspaper story played out on the national news. So far cause of death has not been determined but my guess would be carbon monoxide poisoning.

So the dog decided to die of hunger in the bed next to the son eh? That's so sad. CO poisoning ? Maybe.

BTW, why would the A/C be on in March 1999 ? I think they were trying to set a let's-not-get-discovered record or something.

More support to the idea of carbon monoxide asphyxiation as cause of death :( If the dog would have survived a murder/suicide it probably would have resorted to consuming the bodies for food before it eventually died trapped in the house (ghastly I know).

They said that the friends in Germany thought they stayed in Flordia, and the ones in Flordia, thought they moved to Germany...

strange if you ask me.

Actually, using AC in SouthWest Florida can be a year-round event (it's a sub-tropical zone here). It sounds like all the utilities were set up for automatic payments so the power was kept on. Neighbors might not have noticed because they were snowbirds from Germany...it might have been assumed they went back to Deutschland (we have a large German population in our region).

omg, what a horrible story :(

I don't understand how NO ONE could know for three years. Didn't anyone try and call them on holidays or something?

seems so strange....and so sad too, to think that somehow, no one seemed to know the difference of them being alive or dead.

:(:(

Unfortunately we really don't get to know our neighbors today like our parents and grandparents did :(
