What Credit Union out there is the best? You don't need to tell me but I know a lot of credit unions are only local but there has to be at least one best one that services everyone.

I've been taking money out of my credit union lately. They just can't compete with the online places because they have to maintain branches.

If you're in the bay area, I've been using Keypoint credit union. They're unlimited checking is awesome and free with direct deposit. You can use any ATM (CO-OP or not), and if they other bank charges you you can get reimbursed for those charges. They basically allow you to use any ATM in the world for free.

Plus, they have 24-hour phone support, something a few of the others here didn't have.

I used to belong to one in Cheyenne. It was great. Very friendly and competent service.

Hi, I'd like some money.
Here ya go.
Thanks. Bye.
See ya next week hon.

On the other end of the spectrum I just closed my CU account here as the CU was getting way too bank-like with cold service and lousy savings rates. Also they just moved into commercial real-estate lending which, to me, screams "Get your money out NOW!".

I've belonged to my union's credit union for many years.

Overall, credit unions can be more expensive than commercial banks, (no free checks, often no free checking, some fees higher) but since everyone is a "member' instead of a customer, everything is supposed to pay for itself, rather than having one service cover the losses of another.
However, loans are usually MUCH cheaper through your credit union than most banks, and they often offer services that banks don't...
