credit report

One my relatives screwed up my credit. However, that person paid off that debt almost three years ago. Now I want to refinance the house but I have a problem with my credit. That debt is still showing up in my credit report. I called the bank, they said that that account is not in the bank system. I have tried to make them clear up my credit but I have not been successful. Does anyone know what I should do to clear this dispute with that bank and my credit report? 😛

The incident can stay on your report for up to 7 years. But if it is something you can clear up you would want to contact the company you received the credit report from. I had an issue with Equifax and they resolved my issue within 2 weeks.

You have to write a letter to all 3 credit reporting agency's. Transunion, Equifax, and Experian I believe. Document with any information you have from that bank showing you have no debt to them. Also, if you have all of that documentation and the rest of your credit is OK then you shouldn't have a problem refinancing, most banks will look past a credit issue still on your report if you can document that it shouldn't be there.

You can PM me if you are looking to refinance in California.

OK, is it your fault (i.e., you cosigned for your naughty relative), or is it that your credit file somehow got "married" with your relative's?

If it's the former, sorry, but it's on there for 7 years from the last activity date on the account.

If it's the latter, you need to write to all the reporting agencies and have them fix the errors. They have 30 days to do so. If they refuse to correct errors, you have the right to sue them.

Agreed.

You should dispute it with all 3 credit bureau's IN WRITING. It's not going to be quick or easy, it will take time.
