A friend of mine is starting his own business and he wants to hire some interns for help. Unfortunately, due to low amount of capital he is trying to think of other ways of getting help. I suggested offering Credits to interns, but I have no idea how it works... Does the employer have to pay the university for the credits the intern earns or is it free for the employer? how does it work? Thanks.

I did this once for 2 credits over the summer. I just had to write the paper and pay for 2 credits worth of classes. I never had to fill out any paperwork for the employer to pay or get anything signed to allow payment to the school from the employer. I don't think the employer has to pay anything, unless there is a single upfront donation fee to register an employer as a valid place to get credit at, but i doubt it.

We get interns from a local tech school. The students are required to do an intership of 240 hours. We pay them an hourly wage, but some companies don't. The employer pays nothing to the school.

It's not up to the employer to offer credits, that's the school's decision.

If the job is closely aligned with the student's major, you could probably get interns free but realize if the students have a choice, they are going to go where they get paid. Since we pay pretty well ($11/hour), we generally are able to get the top students.
