I used to do it, but now lots of places won't accept your CC if it's not signed. Apparently VISA changed their rules and they won't accept even if you have ID.

Ohh btw, it's actually against Visa/Mastercards rules to ask for ID when using a card.

Mine has "See I.D." in big black letters in the signature area, and very rarely does anyone bother to check. Home Depot is always good about it, as are several other little local places, but most couldn't give a rodent's posterior.

A news program did a spot telling people to do that but then had to issue a retraction the next day. Like someone already said, they are not supposed to ask you for ID. Another point the program later found out was that if it says "check id" all someone has to do is sign "check id" and its valid.

For those of you that were wondering, the card does not come with "See I.D." or "Check I.D." printed on it. The people in this thread wrote it in the signature field on the back.

A lot of people do this. I think the VISA/MC rules do say that if it's signed, the card is valid and you don't have to show any I.D. (unless maybe the signature is different). Also, the card MUST be signed for it to be valid. Some places won't let you use it even if they confirm your I.D. because the card is not signed.

I guess the most effective thing you can do is sign it AND write "Check I.D." on the back, but the clerk doesn't necessarily have to do it. Some places like my school campus stores will ALWAYS check for ID no matter what and look at it under great scrutiny. They can't afford to lose any money to fraud (and people like JeffreyLebowski).

Why are they losing money to me? I think you need to read my posts more carefully. One said that stores aren't supposed to accept cards that say "Check ID" but aren't signed. Another said why, using a hypothetical example.

Mine are all blank.
I don't sign and I don't put check I.D.
Never had any problems, hope it stays that way...

I have them check my ID.. suprisingly, most do ask for it..

I've had the Post Office not let me use my CC because I said "See ID" on the back instead of a signature.. they said there has to be a signature..

And if I had a signature on the back.. most people would say what I write isn't the same.. My signature NEVER is the same.. cause I just scribble crap out.. :p

Ever think that if your wallet can be stolen and someone can sign the card any way they please? Signing the card isn't much protection, but at least it's something.

I have it signed and please check ID. Still get about 50% asking for ID.

My Visa has my picture and my signature on the front cause I am l33t:D

CompUSA is the only place which checks my ID with that credit card. But the white people ahead and behind me don't get checked when they bore the same stuff with a cc :|:frown::disgust:

I wish more cards offer this feature. I know Citibank does, but I've never gotten around to sending in a picture.

Also, when are smart cards going to be implemented in the US? I have the the Citibank smart card, and I can only really use this feature at home in the free SC reader. When I was in Europe, I saw tons of people with smart debit cards.

I do both. Sign, then put check ID on there. When they do not ask for it, I ask them to read the back of the card, and tell me what it says. If they read it correctly, they get a polite nod and then I say "Well, did you check my ID?" That will ususally correct them in the future. I'm not really an ass about it, but I get the point across.

You aren't an ass if you are merely helping them point out their mistake so they can learn from it. Of course, if you are making min. wage, I doubt they give a sh!t.

I know its for my benefit, I just hate it when a punk kid is asking me for ID to feel important, which I feel some of them do.

My CC was unsigned for a long long time. A lot of clerks would turn it over presumably to check the signature, possibly out of habit, but noone ever noted that there was no signature. Until at last someone really looked and asked me to sign the card. Actually, I think I'd prefer they ask for ID and look at you to make sure your ID photo looks like you.

I have "Please check ID" written on the back of all of them. Target is the only place that checks. They almost always do it regardless of whether or not you have it signed on the back

How many of you have this on your CC? Do people actually check it?

I have "Check ID" as my signature...people check it about 15% of the time
