Credit Cards and Billing Address

Can someone answer something for me. When a website asks you for your billing address that matches with your credit card, how close does the address have to be to your billing address for the transaction to go through? For example, can the street number vary? Can the street name vary? I'm pretty sure the zip code cannot vary? This is applicable to VISA credit cards.

the CC card address must match exactly with the billing address as on file, the shipping address can vary as long as the CC company has that on file. I do the latter all the time.

AFAIK, it must be "exactly" the same -- though IIRC, word/abbreviation substitutions are permitted (road => rd, street => st, etc).

Not true with VISA I believe. In some cases, my street name has varied by a couple characters and the order has still gone through. Anyone else know how far you can push this?

Why do you want to do this? 😕 I'm pretty sure you're right that the ZIP code has to be right, and I'm pretty sure the house number has to be right too.

Some smaller merchants often call the credit card companies to verify shipping addresses so if you spelled something wrong and they pronounce it more or less correctly the rep on the other end will verify it's correct.

When I had a website, I used to get these strange transactions, where the billing address was here in the USA, but the customer wanted products shipped to Russia, Nicaragua, or Philippines.

I did not try and put those orders through, I simply canceled them.

Charges can be made to a credit card with no address verification at all, just depends on how much the company cares. It's usually set up through their merchant account that the more information provided along with the transaction, address, phone, cvv2, etc., the less of a percentage the cc company takes from the transaction.

Your basic address verification checks the zip code and the street address only. For example, 123 Main Street can pass through verification if the real address is 123 5th Avenue. With the same zip code of course.
