I keep getting these United Airlines Mileage Plus and buncha other credit card offers, and right now I only have 1 crappy $500-limit MBNA credit card I got through my college. I'm graduating this June and I've been working part time for the past few years (decent pay, but obviously it's still pretty meager).

Anyways, I've been looking to travel a bit this summer. I've purchased everything off of my WAMU debit card for the past 6-7 years or so, and looking back through my purchasing history, if I had a credit card I would've got some cool rewards/miles/whatever. Not quite sure how this Mileage Plus thing works but I'd like to get some rewards so maybe I could take a vacation 1-2 years from now.

Discuss?

IMO you're better off finding a 0% credit card and earning interest on your money in the bank. That'll probably go further than their stupid rewards. Then again maybe I'm just not using the right credit cards.

I've got a AMEX that gives points. I think I have 18,000 points which buys me something stupid like an alarm clock radio. I then have a discover card that gives cash back. That's at least ok.

You're assuming he's carrying a balance.

If not carrying a balance...

Costco Amex gives 2% on travelling (i.e. plane tickets).

Citi Dividend Platinum Select is an all-around good card (5% on gas and groceries)

imo, a cc with good cash rewards will net more in the end than a travel rewards

Starwood American Express....universally considered the BEST travel rewards card. Don't believe me?.....Go to www.flyertalk.com to find hundreds of discusssions on teh subject.

Also buried on Flyertalk, you can get a United Visa (free first year and 20k miles), US Air Visa (free first year and 15k miles), American Airlines Mastercard (free first year, 15k bonus). While this should share space in your wallet, Starwood AMEX should be the primary card you keep over the years. Period.

Which airline do you usually fly?

I prefer cash rebate cc's which do not carry an annual fee and don't require 25,000 - 40,000 miles for a "free roundtrip ticket" (with certain restrictions).

As previously mentioned the CitiBank Dividend Platinum Select offers:
  • 5% cash back on purchases at supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations
  • 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • $5 cash back for each balance transfer of at least $1,500
  • Access to Citi® Identity Theft Solutions
  • 0% APR on new balance transfers for first 12 months
  • No annual fee
