What CC would be easier for a 19y/o university student to get ... Visa or MC? Is one better than the other?

neither in particular... you should have no problem at all getting a card. Everyone I know just called their bank and had them set up a first card. No features, reciculously low limits and horrible rates, but they are gaurenteed not to turn you down if you dont do stupid things like bounce checks all the time. Shop around and apply for a card you like... it's that simple :)

Then play 6-8 weeks of phone tag with them over SS cards and bank statement letter heads and your're almost there :)

visa and MC don't offer cards directly (i guess technically they do)... each is just a conglomeration of banks that themselves issue the cards. In any case, if you are going to a relatively big school, I'm sure there will be plenty of companies with booths setup to give out applications during your first week(s) of each semester.

I don't trust them. I fix the average college student's computer... you think I trust them with my SS#???

its all frat kids on my campus. they go door to door in the dorms, hand out t-shirts in exchange for each app, and for every app they bring back, the bank issuing the card donates a buck or two to their keg fund. welcome to the fleecing of this nation's youth.

Sign up for a student card, from Capital One (my first credit card) or American Express (I have a Blue for Students card). They have low limits that will build over time, kinda high interest rates, but you're pretty much gonna get the card if you apply...since they are student cards, you really don't need much (or any) credit.
