Credit card holders...your rights according to M/C

So I was at Best Buy earlier tonite buying some computer related stuff and at the check out,the cashier asked me for my drivers license cause I was paying with my MasterCard and I said "I dont have it but that shouldn't matter." (knowing that I left it in my car)

She said she couldn't make the sale then so I asked her to call the manager and he came over right away and said "yup,we need a photo ID if your going to use your credit card here."

I told him that they are out of line asking me for my ID and explained to him that they are going against Mastercards policy and he says " oh well,I'm not going to argue with you." I just walked away and left the stuff there,I really didn't need it anyways (dam Hot Deals Forum, hehe)

Now I know there's alot of fraud going on around the country but policy is policy reguarding your rights as a credit card user. I went and called Mastercard just to confirm with them about this policy and they told me to call back during office hours to report the store cause they are completely wrong asking for ID and they like to know about these things.

She told me many cashiers are not trained properly and don't understand the correct procedures. I told her that is was the manager and she said "them too"

I know this sounds petty but it's just the point. If I have to follow the policies that they have posted on there walls as a consumer, they have to follow Mastercards policies as a merchant.

Your complaining because they are trying to make sure you are the right person. Nothing wrong with asking for id. Take a chill pill and be happy.

what ARE the policies.....i ask for ID when it's not signed, when it's not clearly signed, or it says "check id"..........people say "oh thank you" when i ask for ID, since i geuss most places don't........

I dont mind showing ID on a CC purchase, I would rather them check it than not.

I realy dont like the new deal of not having to sign if it is under $50 on a CC

The policy is this: If the card isn't signed, they need an id.

If the card is signed,PROCEED.

The merchant is suppose to follow Mastercards policy and that's it. I'm just letting you know your rights as a consumer and I don't need chill pills pal.

Checking ID's on a signed card can get the store fined. The CC companies rather eat any fraudulant charges than to allow stores to start making CC's any harder to use than cash.

Of course, it's the store that eats the fraudulent charges in most cases, and if not, then its the merchant bank that handles the transactions. Rarely does the CC company itself have to fork over any losses. This is exactly why you see so few credit cards offering one-time use numbers, despite this feature having several orders of magnitude safer anti-fraud levels. Same reason why you don't see a major revamp in credit card security, especially with online transactions where fraud is so prevalent.

I HATE having to show id and signing etc, it's very annoying, i just want to pay and leave.

You guys crack me up. So what if they ask you for id. Does your picture on your license look that bad? The store is just trying not to get screwed for allowing someone to use a CC that is stolen. If you don't like them doing that then just shop somewhere else.

You are probably the kind of person who bitches about them checking receipts at the door when you leave. They have no legal right to do it, but if it saves them money then it eventually comes back to the consumer. A couple of seconds to look at the receipt and your out of there.

yeah wtf, i got ID'd while I was trying to charge snacks at the movie theater...this was with a visa though, might be completely different...

I hate customers like you. I try to protect the customers and some of them go crazy. I used to work ar RadioShack, and I asked this guy for his ID. He was so POed that he started yelling at me. I kept my composure and told him that it is to protect his identity. He drove off peeling his tires.

I actually thank when cashiers ask for my ID when I am buying stuff.

and it seems to me that this is also a nationwide policy for COmpusa, i got so pissed too cuz i didn't bring my wallet w/ me, made me go there for NOTHING (me no car so no reason to bring license)
i even tried talkin to manager, no go 🙁

on another scenerio, i was at target, damn Biatch asked for my ID on an item that costs $10 bucks, after looking at my license, she then asked me to sign my name like the way i signed it on the license, GIVE ME A BREAK, !!! i let you see my license, now u want me to trace the stupid sig i signed on my license 5 yrs ago???
damn target employees.

If your credit card got lost or stolen, you'd want them to require ID to use it. I don't know about Mastercard, but my Visa card is invalid if not signed. Otherwise, I would've left it unsigned to make SURE they check ID.

Stop whining and pull out your ID. If you don't have a picture on your card, it's very easy to see why merchants ask you to do this. The merchants usually end up eating most fraud costs.

"Bank credit card issuers lose about $1 billion each year in fraud, mostly from stolen cards. They also lose another $3 billion in fraudulent bankruptcy filings. However merchants absorb more than $10 billion each year in credit card related fraud."

(edit)If you are not keeping your credit card in your WALLET/PURSE with your ID, you're probably even more apt to lose it. Even more reason for you to want merchants to check ID when using your credit card!(/edit)

We have those self credit card readers at walmart as many other stores do and many customers just slide their card and put it away. I don't bother asking to see a license, not worth my time and I don't compare signatures. Walmart doesn't care about this believe it or not. I will ask for a drivers license for any checks greater than $200.00 because that is company policy and they are extremely fussy.

Let me get this traight.. If someone stole a CC from you and went on the shopping spree and later you found out that he/she was able to do so because the stores did not check ID's wouldn't you be pissed? I'm sure you'd be pissing vinegar all over the place.

You guys do know that it's federal law that only the first $50 spent with a stolen credit card is you're responsibility to pay off.

...and how does this help the merchants who get fscked? Typical Americans, always thinking about themselves instead of looking at the whole picture.

What is a merchant to do if the credit card company says that the place of business does not need to look at an id? I dunno about you but at this time of year there is long lines at the checkout and I'm not gonna spend the extra time waiting for people to get their licenses out so I can compare them when I have a long line of already impatient and stressed customers. They want to get the customers out of the store as soon as possible. If someone goes on a spending rage and gets a huge cart of electronics, heck no I'm not gonna let them through without an id. I just use a little common sense.

my MC isn't valid unless signed, i didn't sign it, i use it, they look at the back, and then hand the card back to me... its stupid

News flash: Not all credit fraud is done with >$200 purchases. Far from it. I really don't give a flying fsck what the card companies say, because they're not the ones losing out. The stores make the policies; the stores decide how they take payment. I don't feel sorry for any of you whiners who can't take the extra (maximum) 10 seconds to whip out your ID and are refused at the counter. Fine, go somewhere else.

If the merchant wants to get customers through the line and doesn't consider it important enough to warrant the ID, that's their decision. A poor one, IMO. Comparing the names on credit cards to IDs doesn't take that long, especially if you've done it a couple times. I hope they get nailed hard, and maybe even learn from it.
