Credit card fraud - dumb a$$ gas station

My mom noticed 8 charges, done every day for a little over a week, for $50 worth of gas from a Shell gas station in Richmond Hill, Queens. How did they think that this would go unnoticed??? If they charged $30 a month she probably wouldn't have noticed it but, seriously, how dumb can you get? Am Ex was notified and they said that they'll take care of everything, but it just strikes me as odd that they assumed no one would complain about $400 in gas charges in one week.

edit: added NUMBER to the topic

Well he obviously has his criminal wit about him, good thing he was so dumb, he coulda had that for a while. Do they have the liscence plates and all that?

What makes you think that it's the gas station making the charges? 😕

What sorta crook drives a vehicle that requires that much gas? Also, we've been to that gas station - the self serve credit card machine requires that we enter our billing zip (which is not the zip code that the gas station is in), so I'm guessing this was authorized using a POS machine.

It took a week for your mom to figure out her credit card was stolen? Seems to me she was the stupid one for not cancelling it sooner? I'm guessing the crooks just decided to use it as much as they could get away with and figured it was going to be cancelled right away but since it wasn't kept using it.

Isn't there a typical scam where someone goes to a gas station and goes up to someone else filling up and tells them that the pump they're at won't take their card so offers to fill up for them in exchange for cash to pay for their own?

When my FIL's wallet was stolen a couple of years ago, the thieves made 3 charges at gas stations for > $20 in the 30 mins time it took for him to get the cards shut down. The cops said it was SOP for the crooks to go fill up all thier buds tanks as soon as they got a card.

She still has her card, i'm guessing they stole the number from a previous transaction or kept on running it from a previous fill up.

Well then that would kinda help in the story as then it'd almost have to be done from within the store and not just used at the pump. All the details FTW.

Good point, sorry for the lack of detail - she has her card, they used the number - which I'm pretty sure has to be done in house.

Hopefully they'll pass that info along to the authorities and they'll crackdown on it. I wonder how many others it's happened to.

You might actually have your mom contact the police about it, as a lot of times they won't do anything unless they get enough complaints about something like this.

The Am Ex rep suggested that she let them take care of it

Your mom wouldn't notice gas charges that she didn't pay for? I guess I just like to keep track of my spending more than her. If there's money dropped on gas that I don't remember buying, that raises a flag

Do you check your statements every day? How else are you supposed to know that fraudulent charges have been made? The one week she took to notice the activity wasn't halfway as bad as you make it out to be...

Yeah, my mom is actually insanely good at that stuff. She caught a 40 cent charge on her statement that was odd to her so she called her credit card company about it. She checks her statement online and on paper and contacted am ex the second she saw the charges.
