Credit card fraud: check your statements....read inside...

I checked my credit card statement online earlier and saw a $197.99 charge to "ISUBMIT WEBSITE SVCS". This was not an authorized charge. I took care of it through my credit card company. I just want to alert all of you to this so that you can check your statements as well. If you have a similar fraudulent charge or know anything about this please post a response. Thanks!
 
Yes, I just caught one from D'Art Entertainment(Boulder, CO) last month. That was the first one I'd ever had, although probably not the last.

Especially now that most banks/credit card companies offer online access to your statement. It's funny that people rarely read their account agreement and disclosure (including myself, a bank employee, LOL) ... there's probably some legal mumbo jumbo jargon that says you must dispute the charge within 30 days in writing, otherwise you're SOL.

and people please remember to NEVER EVER EVER EVER USE A DEBIT/CHECK CARD FOR INTERNET PURCHASES!!!!!!

you usually have 60 days from the day your bank sends out the paper statement to dispute a charge. In UK, it's 90-180 days, i think.
 
Believe it or not, some people put the check in the mail and never even glance at the statement. It's very important that you make sure the whole bill is legit!

That's what I do, write a check to CitiBank for a credit card payment for instance, I receive the cashed check and my banking statement in the mail it goes into a box with other unopened statements, I just use online banking to check all my account activity.
 
I also have some mysterious entity removing a small some of money from my checking account at various times without my authorization :|
 
I had this happen right before Christmas.

We found charges on both of our cards.

On the one someone was betting at an online site...a call to the company indicated a sports wager for the max amount they allow.

On the other one there were three charges...two of which had been credited back, but the one was for an out of country web service. We didn't call them, just disputed the charges through the credit card company.

Actually the "bookie" wouldn't work with us to find out who done it, so as soon as I can find someone to notarize the forms, the charges will be disputed.

Made Christmas somewhat of a bummer...we hadn't planned on spending all cash for presents, so we had to cut back alot.

Also remember that a phone call may not be enough. Legally you must contact them in writing, so after that call be sure to send off a confirming letter.

When my daughter was 16 she got a credit card, and every month she got unauthorized charges, sometimes several of them, often hundreds of dollars. I think that these sleazeballs pick on people like that who don't know better. Fortunately she was able to get rid of all of them, but she said her friends would often rather pay than go through the hassle or (worse) tell their parents. Sick.

She now knows a lot more about credit cards than most people. I forced her to make all of the callbacks herself, but now she's a pro. It's almost a game for her - spot the unauthorized charges.
