Credit Card Cash Rebates on Gas

Hey Everyone,

Has anyone actually calculated their cash rewards when relating to gas purchases on their credit card? For Citibank dividends rewards card, they state 5% on all gas purchases, However going back and calculating all my gas purchases, they have been only giving 1%.

I have called customer service this week, they could not give me a straight answer on why I am being shortchanged. After looking over their terms I think i have figured it out. Their exclusion specifcally states, convienant stores are excluded. This leads to every freakin gas station that you go to, that has a convienant store, will exclude you from the 5% rebate, because they do not know if you purchased 40 bucks of gas, of 40 bucks of chips and soda.

Same thing with Amex blue cash, they exclude auto repair shops. Some gas stations have auto repair shops. Looking at the year end summary purchases on their website for my account, i see that is how they categorize.

Anyone have experience with how they determine when you get 5% and when 1%?
Dam credit card companies always find a way to screw.

over the past 4 months, i have payed exactly at the gas pump itself, never inside. All the rewards have been 1%, freakin rip off if you ask me

is this the only thing you use the card for? It would be really complicated for me to try to untangle my statements enough to figure this out...

What gas station?

shouldn't matter. They all get processed on the same link...

nope, i believe they are classified differently actually....if i remember correctly on FW finance, paying at the pump almost aways guarentees that is classified correctly, but if it inside, it may not be, depending on the gas station

The Citibank terms say that the purchase must be identified electronically (via some code used in the authorization process) as a gas purchase or you only get 1%, and that the way the purchase is identified is competely controlled by the merchant. Paying at the pump has always worked for me, but I suppose it's possible that certain places might not work.

That being said, I have always gotten my 5% rebate on gas, and have used probably 20 different gas stations over the last year.

Maybe try a different gas station to see if that makes a difference?

All sorts of gas stations, Exxon, mobil, 76, shell. All have convienant stores. Many other purchases too, but mainly computer related stuff. Never supermarkets, Those are correct at 1%

No such problems with my Citi Dividend card. Only use the card for groceries and gas, so its easy enough to track. Pretty much max out the $300 each year.

I just checked and I actually received 4% worth of my 4 gas purchases (the only 4 transactions that month).

I went further back to check the accuracy and it's never 5%. In fact, for a bill that mixes gas with retail stores alongside a $1700 amount for royal caribbean (total was $2491), they only gave me back $6.63. The $1700 alone should be $17. What's up ?

You will earn 5% on purchases made at supermarkets, drugstores and gas stations and 1% on all other purchases.

😕

I get my 5%. Sometimes it takes a while for things to show up (according to their fine print) but I've gotten mine on time every time. The only time I didn't get my 5% was at an Arco gas station. It's listed as a car repair place in the system.

Yes, I buy only gas and groceries on the card and get exactly 5% back. Check your online statement, you'll earn a "base 1%" on everything plus the "bonus" 4% on gas, groceries and pharmacy.

yes. i was really confused at first until i called them. since i only used that card for gas my first three months, i was confused when my rewards balance online was obviously showing only 1%.

however, they will credit the bonus 4% rebate later. in the end it works out.

Correct.
Adjustments are made at the end of the statement period.

end of the statement period as in the very next statement you'll receive ? ... for the purchases made on the previous statement ? I guess I don't understand why they don't give you the full 5% if everything's accounted for (closed for that month already).
