Creative X-Fi

Elite Pro definitely has X-RAM and yes its on the website.

Virtually no games make use of the X-RAM yet but basically when you start using something like 128 voice channels performance can be significantly better if the game has been programmed to use X-RAM.

I think X-RAM will take a pretty long time to catch on but its better that its there now so at least develpoer have the option to use it. Its not worth extra $$$ at this point though. I bought it just incase.

well, i wouldn't have use for the Fatal1 cause my case wouldn't allow it because the front is covered (PC-V1100b Silent Plus) so that leaves me the Elite Pro, but i bet the makers of CSS and DODS will implement this if it is brought up to them 🙂

Cheers

There are some "X-RAM optimized" patches for certain games, but even here the performance boost isn't dramatic. I say it's marketing since it doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense to me to code games for 64 MB SDRAM just to handle more channels in games.

Save the cash and get the Xtreme Music instead. It's more expensive but also better than Audigy 2/4. EAX 5, CMSS, better sound in general.

Exactly.

Just getting a regular X-Fi can take significant load off the CPU in games, but by the time anything makes much use of X-ram, there will probably be a better, cheaper sound card with it.

Like I said, the performance doesnt really show until you start hitting 128 voices at which point performance doubles. I dont know any games that use 128 voices yet. I think the matched games will let u pick 128 but its really not offering anything extra since the games were designed for a much lower voice numbers.

So it remains to be seen when X-Ram will do more than take up PCB space.

Think of it like this: Even if Quake 1 was at 2000x2000 resolution the graphics are still outdated. So just cause there is more doesnt mean it is better until developers actually do something with it.

Yeah, the BF2 option Ultra High (X-Fi only) apparently activates 128 rather than 64 (or 63?) hardware "voices", but that does not require the higher capacity of the "X-RAM" models and I don't know if it actually makes a performance difference to have it. Actually, I heard some scuttlebutt about performance problems with X-Fi and headphone mode... check appropriate forums 😉 In any case, there is still mystery surrounding the default OpenAL via Direct3D wrapper issue. Ergo, to be on the safe side, it is best to replace the wrapper in the game folder with the router.

Yeas get an Audigy 2 ZS for $50 and when the price of the X-FI drops to $100 with X-RAM then buy it.

I do not know what you mean by CSS (Cascading Style Sheets?) and DODS (Department of Defence System?)
