I also just noticed, creative now has a PCI-express soundcard!

That's an Xtreme Audio, aka, Audigy variant. It's not a true X-Fi, and is missing features.

However, the original deal is quite good.

I know not to take newegg.com reveiews too seriously, but they do say that creative makes no mention of it on their website. I suppose drivers are not even available for download.

This is the PCI-E x1 variance card.
I'd like to see more and more x1 variances out of this pci technology.

Back to the OP's post.
This is a great deal.
I used to pay that much for a lesser version or the Platinum, to be exact.
One big complaint if you're Vista 64 user.
The damn driver refuses to play nice from time to time.
Besides many apps still do not work on Vista 64.

How does the X-Fi line of sound cards compare with the Audigy 2 series?

I have the Audigy 2 and dunno if its worth upgrading for my pending PC build.

I would say you won't notice a difference in sound. Maybe some problems with compatibility. I have heard X-fi, but it sounds exactly the same as my Audigy 2. Then again, if you have $700 head phones or something. You may notice it. I'm moving my Aud2Plat to next build. 45nm Penryn!

I own both and I agree.
Upgrade to a nice pair of speakers if you want to go with X-Fi path since it offers higher resolutions DAC.
Otherwise stay with Audigy 2 which is not a bad card at all.

I have Audigy, Audigy 2 ZS, and X-Fi; X-Fi sounds the best, but not by a big margin. You do need a decent set of speakers to bring out the sound. I have not migrated to Vista yet, due to its various performance and hardware compatibility issues. Most gamers still prefer XP at this point.

You can get an X-Fi for the same price as the Platinum.

X-fi (Extreme music) much better than Audigy 2 ZS for me. Very noticeable on my Klipsch 2.1's. And it's finally working well with my Vista 32 HP since the recently released Vista apps CD from Creative.

If you don't need the front panel (and the questionable x-ram) Creative offers a $69.99 X-Fi Extreme Music (recertified with 30 day guarantee). Pretty good deal as they aren't produced anymore. Or wait for the gamer deal again.........

hmm, I don't see the rebate? Am I missing something? It says $174.xx for me, no rebate on the newegg site or creative.com.

if you don't need the front X-Fi I/O Drive and remote, compusa has Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Professional Series for $100, without rebate.

Is this considered a good deal?
Or would it be better to wait for the regular X-Fi XtremeGamer to be on sale for about $50-60 AR?

I had the almost identical Audigy 2 platinum.. and now have the new card in question (the fatality card)... There is a noticiable difference in sound quality, less noise, clearer, etc. not to mention this card has on board memory and better software.. My audigy failed (by my own abuse) so I had to upgrade.. I paid more than this deal though, but Im still glad I bought it.. this one is black instead of white as well, which looks better

Darn I got Audigy 2 ~4 or more yrs ago, and it is still serving me very well, all this time, changed at least 4 rigs by then. Best deal for the money!

Those with on board sound cards are missing out. Today i played MTWII on my nForce3 rig with onboard sound... sound is so poor.

'XtremeGamer' is a model optimized for gaming which lacks the I/O extensibility of the higher end X-Fi models. Just get the one that suits your need.

Ok Update. ZZF shipping sucks....I bought this on Thursday of last week and got it tonight. I paid for 2 day shipping. FEDEX picked it up on Monday and delivered it today.

In other news...It was worth the wait. The quality of the sound over the on-board sound is amazing.
