Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite 7.1 Channels 24-bit Sound Card $209.99 AR+S/h

will that make things sound $210 better than onboard audio? I use onboard now and it doesn't sound that bad to me, but maybe it's because I don't know any better.

Oh man, no. If you're this uneducated about the issue you should definitely stay away from this deal.

This is definitely a card aimed towards audiophiles/gamers. For most, the Xtreme Music version (much cheaper up front and even after any rebates) is more than enough. Even then you need high quality speakers and/or headphones to take advantage of improved sound quality.

Yeah, you'd pretty much know if you wanted something like this.

If you're coming from onboard, a soundcard much less expensive than this one will still get you a big jump.

You'd have to have very good headphones or excellent speakers to justify this.

I'd pick up an Audigy 2 (not value) used for $40 or less - that's what I did, and even with just meh speakers the difference between the Audigy and onboard is quite noticeable. But then, I've always been picky about audio...
