yes, shocking news - they released source code and some claim it works this time.

ALSA people are working on their own driver, maybe this will help so that we finally have decent support, like audigy has.

Yes, so you paid for two for no good reason.

It is applicable in some cases. HTPCs plug into sound systems that onboard may not have the features / connections for and gamers who play games that make use of EAX to a significant degree (some games' sound effects are noticeably superior with EAX (when supported by the game / OS), others not so much).

But yeh, for 90%+ of the cases, it is not worth it to buy a ~$35 discrete sound card.

I have an Audigy 4 Pro only because I use the breakout box and inputs in my home recording setup. For simple output, I agree with Nothinman. Not much reason anymore to pay for a card and use up a slot.

i don't agree with nothingman.

i bought a sound card just to hook up headphones or 2.1 speakers. the sound is much cleaner and clearer than the static infested onboard sound.

i don't know why one would care what one purchases with their own money. way to threadcrap.

I've never had a problem "the static infested onboard sound." Either way, it doesn't really matter - if people want a dedicated soundcard for EAX or the perceived better quality output or just because their motherboard doesn't support the outputs they need, all the power to them.

Any new news on this? I'd like to pull my x-fi back out of the box from under my bed.
