Creative Nomad Zen Vs. Ipod Vs. Archos

Hi all,

Someone on these forums wrote a very detailed review on the IPOD, Zen, and a few other mp3 players, and posted it on a website somewhere.

I can't seem to find that website anywhere now.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think this is what you're looking for. I've owned an iPod, haven't used a Zen, but I have held one in a store and it is a LOT bigger than an iPod, despite what it looks like in pictures. So before making a decision you may want to find a store that carries both (CompUSA does) and check them out in person.

I've actually owned all of those.

Archos is quite bulky and largely plastic dropped that a few times and got cracks and such. But there basically is no copy protection scheme (at least on the early ones), battery life is a bit lacking (but comparable to ipod but the ipod is rechargable etc).

Zen I don't actually own but I upgraded one for a friend and played with it quite a bit. Uses a normal laptop hard drive, better built the LCD is quite small. Good casing, well built but still is quite bulky. Can't really comment on battery life.

iPod is just awsome, I like the 10gb version as it is a bit slimmer, very well built, battery lasts a long time and it is rechargable. Only gripe is that the top plastic piece is not beveled around the edges feels like it should be. Also it gets quite warm when you are doing mass copys from PC. FYI copy protection scheme is kind of a joke, their idea of copy protection is that the files are in a hidden directory.

LOL, I had no clue that was a copy protection scheme? I was like, wtf Apple = teh dumb, what a stupid way to organize the data... LOL.

As far as these three units are concerned. I played with Zen and Ipod and the Con's of the iPod (no on-the-go playlists, no Que, medium sound quality) didn't do much for me because I mainly use it for Book-on-Tape-on-MP3.

The other unit which was really kick butt was the iRiver SlimX CD/MP3 player. That thing rocked for sound quality, and using CD/RW was nice. The iPod is just so much more cool. Had to have it.
