I need a metaphor on racism to use as a focal point for a paper I am writing. Anyone have a good one? Nothing silly, I have to turn this in.

Well, being from the South, I ask because I see too much of the way the media (TV shows, movies in particular) portray us. It's sickening, prejudicial, closed-minded, and wrong. --Pretty much completely wrong as far as the reality of what life is like here goes.
So, I'm just thinking --though I won't lose sleep at night either way-- it would not be prudent of you to write a paper informing someone on a subject which you probably know little to nothing about.
Is there another topic you can choose? If not, do you mind telling me what the basis of your research might be? Specifics would be nice, because ANY generalizations you might make, blanketing "the South" will undoubtedly be wrong.

Sorry to meddle so much in your business. Just thought I would share.

Not to nitpick or anything, but is prejudicial a word? I thought it would have been: "It's sickening, prejudiced, close-minded, and wrong"

A good quote, not exactly a metaphor:

"One man cannot hold another man down in the ditch without remaining down in the ditch with him." - Booker T. Washington

OK... So we all love the confederate flag? Hmmm. I don't. Nor do any of my friends. --Or family for that matter. As a matter of fact, I don't think I come in contact with anyone on a daily basis who likes the confederate flag (except strangers, I'm sure). Is this a preconceived blanket notion about Southerners? We all love the confederate flag?

This is true. Never say that southern whites don't have to deal with prejudices as well.

I'm of a minority in the South. I've never had something I would call racist happen to me. People are really friendly.

Metaphor - The old African fables came to America during slavery. Instead of Anansi the Spider as hero, the slaves used the rabbit when they related it to Joel Chandler Harris; Brer Rabbit is how the slaves Americanised Anasi. The Fox, Brer Fox, is anyone who is blinded by their position, or precieved position, of power. In a straight out fight, Brer Fox would kill or eat Brer Rabbit, but the rabbit uses the Fox's arrogance against him. Brer Rabbit often tricks the Fox by acting stupid. If you are not familliar with this, think of Bugs Bunney vs. Daffy or Elmer as he is just the modern extention of Brer Rabbit. Typically Northerners are arrogant, and think we are so backwards down here, just ripe for the picking. But, in the end, we all know who is Brer Rabbit, and who is Brer Fox. ;)

I'm an arms length away from a Confederate Battle Flag. It hangs near my computer 100% if the time. The Confederates were fighting a war for independence. It's amazing to me that Americans are so self-righteous about freedom and kicking the Brit's a$$ in the Revolutionary war, but do a 180° about face when the Union was able to prevent other freedom seeking Americans from becoming free.

The Confederate States of America have every right to determine their own self rule. There was nothing magic about the Union that removed the right of the people to choose who would govern them. The south has been a virtual prisoner nation for almost 150 years.

Contrast this with us protecting the Kurds in Iraq and the Albanians in Serbia. *They* seem to have some sort of American enforced right to govern themselves in someone else's country.

self rule and freedom.. for all white southerners right? i know that the war wasn't fought over slavery, but slavery probably would have persisted much longer if no war had been fought. its called losing a war, and getting over with it. i honor my ancestors, but i don't fly a chinese flag near my computer.

Folks that think the Confederate Flag stands for racism - Klan members and Self rightious Northerners.
Folks that think the Confederate Flag stands for State's Rights - Most educated people

We are polite down here and don't want to offend anyone, so we have taken the flag down from most places.
But, please understand the historical and current issues.
The flag isn't any more of a hate symbol than the Cross is just because some hate groups use it.
The more State's have power, the less nutballs like Hillary and that other Nut elitest whacko in CA have a say in matters.

No, for everyone. What ever your State is.
And, only those crazy nutball reenactor dress up in costume type get all nostalgic about their ancestors and the flag.
Most folks fly it as a CURRENT sign of defiance against movement that seek to limit State's rights. Anyone who knows anything about Southern politics can tell you that it is controlled in most places by Black politiians.
