I've been stress testing my AMD XP2100+ system to determine what is causing the freezes/hangs while playing games, listening to MP3s, etc...

I am using a Thermalright AX-7 + a Thermaltake Smart Fan running at 4688 RPM (max speed - I cut the thermal sensor leads and shorted them together).

I can run Prime95's torture test for 12-18 hours straight and run regular XP apps (nothing that uses DirectSound/sound features or D3D) w/o any freezes/hangs/crashes/BSODs

My CPU gets about 54C-55C max.

Now when I'm using WinAMP 2.91 to play MP3s it can either crash within 5 seconds or 5 minutes. When using Windows Media Player 9 Series to play MP3s, it crashes within about 2-3 hours.

I'm using the "latest" 3/03 Creative drivers for my X-Gamer 5.1 Live sound card.

The system is NOT overclocked. I have everything on the stock default settings - even the DDR is at stock timings and the video card (Leadtek GeForce 3 std) is not overclocked.

Mobo: Abit KX7-333
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2100+
Sound: Creative Labs sound Blaster Live 5.1 X-Gamer
Vid: Leadtek GF3 standard
RAM: Crucial PC2100 DDR x 2, 512MB total
HD's: Maxtor 40GB D740X ATA133, IBM 75GXP 75GB
DVD-ROM: Toshiba 16x/48x
CD-RW: Sony 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, 40x CD-ROM
NIC: Linksys LNE100TX version 4

OS: XP Pro SP-1

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

TIA!!

I've had sound trouble with Live drivers under XP. Try using the stock Windows XP drivers as they work fine for me.

Could possibly be a PCI latency problem. I have always had problems with my sound cards popping, and latency played a problem for me with battlefield 1942. Here is a nice article on the subject. might not be a problem for you but worth a look.

Its kinda hidden right on the top of powerstrip there are tabs you click on to select other things, they don't look like much in fact I had the same problem as you when i first used powerstrip.
