Creative Labs S750 or Klipsch Promedia 2.1?

I have a buddy that is offering a S750 for $80shipped. However, I do see the Klipsch for $80-90 range as well.

What would AT choose?

Hard to say unless you've heard both. Wasn't the S750 a pretty expensive system when it was available? Anyway price doesn't always denote sound quality nor does the number of speakers. People are very easy to fool sound-wise. The Promedia's are likely to satisfy most. Can't speak for the S750 but they are Creative so I wouldn't bother.

# Two-way satellite speaker features a one inch supertweeter and three and a half inch midrange driver for clear, detailed response up to 40kHz
# Eight inch down-firing long-throw woofer
from amazon
those are reasonable stats, and its 7.1, its certainly more value than the klipsch for the same price. would seem to be equivalent in stats atleast and with a whole lotta extra speakers,...which you can keep as spares if you don't feel like going full bore 7.1

@patrick i think he's buying used...
but yes normally for the same price new more spread thin over more speakers would be worse, but he's comparing friend price to new.

Impressive "sounding" stats for sure. But comparing stats alone is a terribly unreliable way to tell which is better. And more speakers means nothing if they don't sound good.

I'm not retarded, I know the price range is the same, used or not. And the better value is determined by which sounds best, not by the number of speakers (especially if he only goes 5.1)... which you'll also probably need to buy stands for.

Klipsch is well established in the loudspeaker world and the Promedia 2.1 is well known to be a good value. Can't say the same for any Creative speakers. It's highly unlikely they sound better, but they may suffice and having surrounds can add a lot to immersion.

well basic stats you can compare when comparing cheap to cheap is size of cones and such. is a reasonable comparison from two brands of the same level of build, which those two are about. minus any bogus claims about wattage..which i omitted of course. creatives higher end is ok, they purchase cambridge soundworks so they have a little expertise. and that set is high enough end that its not a joke. so its at the very least on par with the promedia based on previous performance of their stuff at that level.

you seem to be confusing used price with new. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/multimedia/display/creative-gigaworks-s750.html the gigaworks had an original price point of 400. so each sat as i said should be atleast on par with the promedia, if not more so. i'd bet it sounded better. its an 8" vs a 6.5" sub for one.

and clearly a cambridge soundworks unit. 80 bucks for that is a steal.

80 bucks for the S750 is a steal, but that speaker set is known for breaking pretty often much like the old Klipsch 5.1 promedia set.

Yeah, I have 2 sets of the promedia 2.1 which sound good and have been working well for many years now.

I also still have all 5 of the surround speakers and wall mount brackets of my promedia 5.1 set, which had it's poorly designed Bash amp die. I'd make sure to crank his system during a test before purchasing, just to make sure it isn't on it's way out (I could tell the amp in mine was declining for a year before it died). If the amp is fine, the set should sound as good as the Klipsch (I definitely can't say the same for lower end Creatives).

It's adtually the 5.1 version of the s750, s550 I guess? I would kill for a pro media ultra 5.1 set. My interest is playing flac music and listening to NPR podcasts so I would like very crisp and clear sounds.

However, my room isn't exactly large and two additional speakers would require stands. But then again, I can afford some speaker stands if I do go this route.

I still think it's a tough call. Heh

cambridge soundworks is respectable in sound quality, don't worry, its good enough for what you want to do at your price point. you aren't going to get better for 80 dollars, or even double that. maybe even more.

if that was the s750 gigaworks set, that would've been a retarded steal for $80. That's actually what I have been using... and I bought it at the brand new price. 🙂 It's no joke in a bedroom.

You're probably right. Come to think of it the Promedia 2.1 isn't THAT good. I could see something else rivaling it, even more so if Cambridge is involved.

I dunno about s750s but man those promedias my roomate owned were horrible. peaky grainy highs, just boomy boomy boomy base. where are my mids?
