I've also recently looked at this, and I hear that it needed an external decoder. What does that mean, and what should I be doing?

oh well. I suppose it is just that they have no spdif input. Same like your z640 simply more powerfull.

Yes, that's it.

I'm just wondering what this decoder thing is about... every review recommends them, but it's $150.

Norm

The decoder would allow you to hook up some digital inputs as well as a standard computer connection.

I don't see the point of getting a $250-ish set of speakers and a $150-ish decoder when you can get a real HT system for $400-ish.

If you are going to spend $400, you might as well get real speakers--aka ones with a tweeter--than the 3" "full range drivers" the Progamers provide, and upgrade to the S750s.

While "full range driver" designs can be very good, they usually involve 10-12" drivers that cost hundreds of dollars, and incredibly expensive cabinets that are dampened with birch plywood...but those systems still suffer from severe cone breakup since it covers so many frequencies...

Multi-driver systems with crossovers (a necessary evil) are still the best way to go.

well, the questions is how good the crossovers are, i.e. if there are any dips or peaks around them.

Btw, review on maximum PC mentions that there are no midrange cones on the satellite with G500, only tweeters. But when I looked at the pics there is defenitely another little cone next to the tweater, what's that?
Super tweater for ultrasounds? Just in case you want to anagonize your dog a bit?

I didn't look closely... but isn't that just a port? (lets air move in and out)

The sats look cute and I like the see-through grills...that asside...it's basically a slight upgrade over Logitech, in the order of the subwoofer. The sats are about equally unimpressive as Z-560/680/5500 sats. These 3 inch "full range" drivers essentially hit a brick wall at 16khz.

dunno, does it matter?
I mean, THEORETICALLY we hear up to 20kHz, but most people have their hearing *BEEP*ed already so that they do not get anything above 16 maybe 18 kHz...
Listening to explosions, shotguns and bazooka on headphones does it.
Still, it is nice to have proper tweater then not to have it

aha, you were right: there was a review of this kit on 3dvelocity. Apparently a good match for X-Fi but a bit pricy one
