I've having disk recognition problems with this cd-rom. I've had it quite some time and off and on it will occasionally not pick up a cd when placed in the drive. I've tried looking for drivers for it, but nothing there. I've even cleaned the sensor. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I've also tried moving the jumpers in the back. When I got to the device manager, it states that the drive is a CDROM Drive/F5E. Help is appreciated.

i have this drive, and it works pretty well. are these the same kind of discs that consistently won't get read? or are they randomly ignored (i.e. are they CDRs)?

Well, it comes and goes for some reason...and no they aren't burned cds. I'll try a cd on the drive and it won't pick it up and then when I put it in another cd rom drive it works fine. So I don't think it is the cds. Thanks for the reply.

I've had experince with two of these drives. (Brand New) One had consistant problems reading ANY CD from the start. (Actually hard locked the system a few times) The other would barely read any burnt CD. I returned both of them and bought a generic no-name drive and haven't had any problems since.

I've used a few of these CD-ROMs in the past. I doubt there is anything to be done about your problem, unless they have a firmware update (very unlikely). I built a PC for a friend with one of these at first, and it had a horrible time trying to read a game disc that uses SafeDisc2 (Red Alert 2, Max Payne). I swapped it out for the same drive, and it still had problems. It would also have miscellaneous problems reading other discs/CDRs. I swapped it out for an Afreey 50x, and it was smooth sailing after that. They're just cheap drives. About all I can recommend is getting a better drive. :(

I've had several Creative drives including this one.

Creative might as well have taken a dump in their boxes and sent me that for all their drives are worth.

I've read reports about Creative's CD-ROM's having problems. I don't have any personal experience with them but your track record seems to support what I've read. With CD-ROM's as cheap as they are, I'd replace it.

I was afraid of this. Thanks for responses though. I've had trouble with this thing on and off, guess it is the drive. Any recommendations for a replacement drive? Over at Newegg.com they have an Aopen 52x that is around $20 some odd dollars? Thanks a great deal.

Your drive probably failed.
I have a 48x Creative that only does 6x. I tried it in three different computers and same result. It spins up to full speed, then servo loses track and slows down to 6x.

Go with another brand
I recentely installed a LG 52x and it was pretty quiet and reliable.

A friend and I both have this drive. I've had pretty good luck with mine so far. His does exactly what you're describing and he swears he will never buy another Creative drive. Must just be a crapshoot as to whether you get a good one or not.

I've installed 15 of the Creative 52x cdroms in the last year, I run one in my personal system, and haven't had a lick of problems with any of them. :)

*edit* They're being used in systems with 95, 98, 98se, ME, Win2kpro, XP Home, and XP Pro

I have a side business putting together computers. I'm the same as "RustyNale." I have used the Creative 52x CD Rom in at least 20-30 computers and haven't had a single problem with any of them. If it's luck of the draw, I need to go to Vegas!

Thanks for all the responses. I guess my drive just was one of he bad ones. I'm thinking about getting the lite-on one at Newegg for $30? Sound like it will be better, except for the noise? Thanks.

Storage Review and lots of people around here will say that the Afree 52x is the best of the bunch. Dirt cheap too.
