Creating shortcuts in Word's "open" pane

where's the registry setting or how do I create custom entries on the left hand pane of the Open dialog box (in word, or whatever)?

I remember doing it way back in Windows 2000, but can't remember how, and googling things like "create open shortcut in word open pane" just leads nowhere, I can't think of how to word it so that google gives a useful batch of results...
